LSU has been on TV a lot the last few years and I've been in TS for a lot of non-televised games so much that the Vandy game was the first one in some time that I listened to the PBP on the radio.

Jim Hawthorne has pretty well been the voice of the Tigers for me. I have vague memories of John Ferguson. I did and do appreciate JH's homerism and his expressing his frustrations if LSU got a bad break. He related well to the everyday fan who lives and dies with the team.

Yeah, I've read some negative stuff lately about Jim Hawthorne but just brushed it off as sour grapes.

However: I did do a doubletake at what seems to be a regression with him in the last few years.

Listening to the Vandy game, he now sounds like a grumpy old man mad at the world.

If I was Doug Moreau I'd feel like belting him one. Hawthorne is constantly contradicting, interrupting and belittling Moreau over rather trivial and stupid things. It's like Hawthorne ALWAYS has to be right over trivial stuff and anything Moreau says, he takes it as an insult and a threat to his aura.

It WAS very distracting and took away from the listening experience. JH years ago was a joy to listen to for me.

Now I don't see quite the problem with his baseball announcing. Basketball I don't listen to much on the radio.

But football is the flagship sport of course and Hawthorne's constant whining and yammering, especially at Moreau, detracted from the game for me.

If this doesn't improve, I must regretfully hold the opinion that it may be time to put Jim Hawthorne out to pasture--at least as far as calling the PBP for LSU football.

Sounds as if he has adopted the Mike Francessa (a genuine a-hole in the NY City sports media world) style of sports journalism.

Uh ... I'm an LSU fan.

If I can't see the game in person or on TV and want to listen on the radio, I don't have a choice.

I will admit that I like his voice, but being in Houston, I don't listen to him anymore.

That being said, it will be interesting to see who replaces him when Jim decides to retire.

Would love to see Jim Henderson do it, but I doubt that would ever happen.

i think charlie would be a good replacement. He is accurate when he does baseball and pretty knowledgeable. Ill take that over showing more emotion if i cant see the game.

I listened to the game while I was in the stadium Saturday night and I honestly have no idea what you're talking about.

Well...he does alot for LSU Sports. He calls football, baseball, basketball, and some girls games I believe. The guy is in his 60s an it may be time for him to hang it up. I think it will happen over the next two years you'll start to see him fading out. Unfortunately, I think the demands of the job have become unbearable for him.

That is not the point. The man has a job to do and it is call LSU sports, not be a negatiger and pain in the arse to listen to.
The original poster makes well thought out good points. I can't listen to him anymore if the game is in anyway not a complete LSU domination.

The typically idiotic response from someone moronic enough to actually think Hawthorne is anything other than horrible. As an LSU fan, you unfortunately don't have a choice if you can't be at an event or its not televised. Fortunately for football that's rarely a problem. But for basketball and baseball it happens frequently. He's such a disaster to listen to that I have, on more than one occasion, just shut my radio off and periodically checked the score rather than have to listen to him. Most schools love their announcer, Alabama and Eli Gold, Georgia and Munson, etc. But just about everyone I know thinks Hawthorne simply is an embarrassment. I know he comes cheap, but it is WAY beyond time for him to go.

If you think he's terrible listen to any other SEC football broadcast and then get back to me.

I hadn't listened to him in a few years since most games are on TV now. He is different than he used to be. He came off as very negative to me, especially about the defense.

Example for those who don't see it - Vandy is gaining yards at the start of the game. Nothing large just some good gains and he starts with this "here we go again" attitude. Made the game out to be worse than it was.
