He deserves every bit of criticism. He should have been fired this morning

Reassigned. He's done a great job recruiting.

Dude is a top notch talent evaluator and recruiter. They do need to bring in coaching help for ST

Good. Kelly needs to bring in a consultant to fix this disaster.

Do you not think Nabers has been catching balls for the last month in practice and showing that he was the best available at the position?

I really don't even remember, when was the last time we had a fb or extra point blocked

That is the point and a good one. Nabors probably caught every punt in practice and scrimmage. Catching punts in a live game is a total different animal. You really don't know till live action. But, I would have given him a "break" after the first muff and let him take back over against Southern.

It was reported Nabers had a bum ankle and had been out of action a week prior to KO
LSU had most team’s entire season of special teams mistakes last night. 2 blocked kicks, 2 muffed punts, and a shanked punt
Kelly has the opportunity to set the tone with the staff as he did with the team when he first arrived
Im curious what he does, if anything at all

And catching punts in a dome or under lights is different than at an afternoon practice.
And fielding punts in a game is as adrenaline-pumping an exercise as exists on the fb field.
He’s not the first player to muff his first game punts.

He did a terrible job frankly.
Those were some simple mistakes. You devote some practice time everyday to STs. Seeing they didn't have the basic principle of down blocking cemented into their head is bad... really bad.
STs absolutely cost us that game.
They did not adequately test the kicking formation, otherwise they would have seen the blocking issue. Furthermore his correction was to change Wire for Jones. It wasn't a personnel problem, it was a training problem. That's worse. It is effectively blaming a player for your faults.
I have to think Nabers wasn't stress tested either. That was bad form going low and trying to catch it in front of you. They did the equivalent of playing catch with him instead of doing drills, otherwise they would've seen that bad form.
All this is camp stuff. All this aren't even details... it is basics.

In his time coordinating special teams, the Irish units have been some of the best in the country. Punt coverage and kick-off coverage were both ranked in the top-20 nationally in 2019 and 2020. In 2019 and 2020, the Irish blocked four punts and returned two of them for touchdowns. Following the 2019 season, Pro Football Focus ranked the Notre Dame special teams as the No. 3 unit in the country.
Mentored kicker Jonathan Doerer to a standout season in 2019
Doerer was a perfect 57-for-57 on PATs while going 17-for-20 on field goals with a pair of makes from beyond 50 yards
Doerer scored 108 points on the year, the most prolific scoring season by a kicker in school history
Doerer became the first kicker in school history and just the sixth player at Notre Dame to have a 100-plus point season
Long snapper John Shannnon was awarded the Mannelly Award following the 2019 season, recognizing the top snapper in the country.
Coached 2018 graduate punter Tyler Newsome and 2018 senior place kicker Justin Yoon to record-setting careers
Newsome averaged 44.7 yards per punt average in 2018 on 53 punts, including 19 punts of at least 50 yards and 19 that pinned the opposition inside the 20-yard line
Newsome shattered the Notre Dame record for single-game punting average against Vanderbilt (Sept. 15), with five boots averaging 59.6 yards (all five punts were over 50 yards and three exceeded 60 yards), two inside the 20-yard line and a 63-yard punt late in the fourth quarter to help clinch the win
Newsome owns four of the top-eight single-season punting averages in school history
Newsome’s 44.0 career punting average ranks second in school history (Craig Hentrich holds the school record of 44.1)
Yoon, Notre Dame’s all-time leading scorer, connected on 17 of 21 field goals and 41 of 43 point-after attempts in the 2018 season.
Yoon also owns the school record for career field goals made (59)
