Playing in a little league ballpark helps

Have you seen what LSU’s baseball facilities looked like when Skip arrived? Skip spent his first few years doing a helluva lot more than just coaching baseball. He had to build the program from nothing.

Jay is a fantastic coach, but this comparison is apples and oranges.

Yep, with the millions of dollars given to him to pay players. Not the same.

True, but college baseball is much more competitive now.

It is, but there's other factors there.

Skip literally built the LSU baseball program. Vitello has done well...but Tennessee threw a shitload of money around to get where they are.

You know what he means. Skip built the baseball program from the ground up. CJJ is a great coach but the LSU program is now bigger than any one person.

Awesome stretch to start his LSU career….. but Bertman’s was from a team sport and culture that was football and basketball at LSU.

Bertman created his success from almost nothing. I remember being at the game he brought the San Diego chicken in for a record breaking crowd of over 3k

I remember going to games in the late 70s/early 80s and only a few 100 fans present. My friends dad was a reporter for the state times/morning advocate. I remember running out of the stadium and getting a foul ball and being able to go back in. We had to give the balls back but they would give us a small “reward” for returning it.

Yes, and even though the SEC was nowhere near what it is today, Skip got LSU from zero to CWS in his 3rd year. And even though LSU didn't win it all in 1986 and 1987, they were competitive in Omaha against the country's best teams.

He doesn’t have to build the brand…. Let’s be honest, after 1975 lsu baseball wasn’t very good. Skip came in 84 and build the brand that is LSU baseball. Jay while recruiting a new team virtually every year has a built brand where players want to play.

So, what I am hearing is, I shouldn’t be yelling at the TV so much?!

But seriously, that is amazing. Congrats to Jay and LSU Baseball. I love me some LSU Tigers baseball!!

If you want to talk truly impressive, Tony Vitello has the highest winning percentage of any coach in SEC history-'- better than previous leader Skip Bertman. And he had to build it. Put your personal feelings about him aside-- that is crazy.

Every program in the SEC is flush with TV money and wants another sport that brings fans to campus during the last spring. Tony had a lot of money invested in the program, which makes it INFINITELY easier to do if you are a good coach.

Keep any comparison of ANYONE today with Skip out of your mouth man. There is absolutely no comparison to be made there.
