Pretty powerful words from the leader of this defense. I'm excited to see change of scenery with Bo bringing back the more aggressive, attacking D to cause havoc. I missed this style. Will be fun to watch.

This is much better than what we use to hear about “Havnt got the full defense installed yet”

That means the offense sucks

Sometimes simpler is better because you don't have to think so much and just instinctively make the play

Correct.

But works both ways.

The defense at the end of last year shut down two elite offenses on the biggest stages. I'd be careful setting the expectation to be light years ahead of that.

Last year was odd. They really struggled. Luckily we barely needed them until the last game. Then they came thru in the clutch.

Just took them awhile to get there. Watching that Ole Miss game was frustrating as hell.

this is exciting to hear, BUT what if they look so good because the offense is no where close to last year? I kind of makes you wonder. We had absolute studs on D last year, seems a little weird that the D would be that much better after losing so much. I'm still very optimistic, just hoping its not because of poor offensive play.

Our offense doesn't play on the field at the same time as our defense. If our defense looks "so good" it'll be because they are.

When your scheme is so complicated that your players aren't confident, it doesn't matter if every single one of them were 5* when recruited. The change to this scheme allows them to play more aggressively and with fewer complications. Too complicated of a scheme usually results in thinking too much and not utilizing the athleticism we have to its full potential.

I am inclined to believe, but Aranda was a heck of a good DC.

Well they came through earlier than that. They played well against Alabama. One Bama TD was on a punt return, one was right at the end of the game when we strangely went man-to-man for a play and we got burned deep.

Indeed.

Aranda attacked plenty actually. And he set the DL loose a fair amount too letting them try to penetrate and just be disruptive while using the LBs to fill gaps instead of doing gap/numbers control with the DL.

So some of this "attacking defense" is a touch of hyperbole with a pinch of myth.

However, a coaches approach and attitude will translate to the players. That will cause a difference, for good or bad, between the last couple years and this year.

But I see where we had defensive struggles last year being a combination of two things that when they occurred simultaneously they resulted in big problems.

A) too cerebral and technical. Guys sometimes didn't know where to be. In these hybrid man-zones that Aranda liked (as to really confuse the looks, which was great) swap offs and such would get blown. The first 7 yds of LoS were sometimes a disaster making it real easy on the opponents OL.

B) The edge. We really really struggled with setting the edge many many times. It was a weakness zero'd in by many opponents. Even Clemson had their way for a qtr because we couldn't set the edge.

So sometimes the fear of being technically unsound (and thus aggressive) because guys were getting out of position and simultaneously our struggles on the edge would hit us every once in a while and team would just march down the field on us.

OM and Plumbob were a result of over-adjusting to try and stop him from out flanking us and then they were just able to blow gaps open because we had OL on LBs 3-7 yds downfield before Plumblee was making his first cut. If you notice he didn't often have to wait on blocks. In between (or off) tackles that's a really bad sign for a D and a great sign for an OL.

I never said he wasn't, and totally agree. I was always an Aranda fan and supported him when things were rough last year. I was confident that he'd right the ship, and he eventually did, helping us win a natty. He did great things here and will be missed.

But if it can be made effective, I prefer the more attacking, blitzing style synonomous with Bo. Personal preference.

I like this comparison between Aranda and Pelini on Lindy's from an anonymous SEC coach:
quote:

They're both great defensive minds, but different personalities. One coaches like the Pope, another coaches like he’s in a rock band.

I hope they are, but it's very hard to compare in the summer when last year's D was going against possibly the best offense ever in practice.
