Had the same thought the first time I saw him pitch for the Tigers. I wonder is Jay looked at Yeski and said: teach this kid some control before he kills somebody!

Last night on the radio they said his release point is 7ft 4in. That's crazy. If he gets his command under control, he'll be fighting for a starting weekend spot next year.

and on the other hand tbf he has 11 Ks and 0 hits allowed in 5.2 IP as well. His K/9 ratio ranks right there with the best in the country. He doesn’t have the control to be trusted yet but he could surprise.

The no hits part is what is keeping him with the 0 ERA obviously, but he also hasnt pitched against anyone of note. Now I dont suspect pitching against SEC teams they will suddenly hit .300 on him, but they also wont hit .000 or .150 either, and thats where you have to be careful with a reliever who in his past 3 appearances prior to last night he gave 2, 3 or even 4 free passes away to get just 3 outs. You absolutely dont bring him into a situation with guys on base but you really gotta have a quick hook in a tight game if he gives away 2 free passes without getting an out first even with bases empty entering the game.

He'll be drafted and go pro after this season, he has zero leverage coming back. And even with wild control he will have draft stock with his fastball and whiff rate he gets.

Jacob should have transferred to Juco after his freshman year at Nichols to get drafted his Sophomore year. That is what the pros wanted. He was National freshman pitcher of the year. Nichols coaches last year kept messing with his mechanics that led to some of hist lost control.

Personally I wish he would have transferred to another school so he could end up throwing more innings. I do hope he is drafted in a spot that would allow him to sign a decent deal. He was a late bloomer in high school too.

First time seeing him pitch last night. He has the body, the arm, etc I am no MLB scout but played a lot of baseball it definitely looks like his mechanics lead to him not showing consistency pitching in or around the zone. As I mentioned earlier that over the top delivery coming from a big guy can be very intimidating but I can see him getting better while at LSU but just his raw talent alone will get him drafted pretty high this draft. Hope he stays though.

He’s pitching at a 51% strike rate, even with a solid control (for him) outing last night. That is hard to insert into a meaningful situation.

It’s more than just No hits.

He’s faced 27 Batters

11 Ks
8 BB
2 HBP

So that’s 21/27 Batters who didn’t even get the ball in play.

5 FO 1 GO

But I looked at his PBP

He’s thrown 130 pitches

13 Foul balls
5 FO
1 GO

so out of 130 pitches hitters only got a bat on 19.

I have heard this and watching last night you could see the inconsistency and last night was supposedly a good night. Can’t have walks against teams in the SEC and I did not see anything other than fastballs also. SEC will feast if the book on him is all fastball or him not throwing strikes.

I've seen him pitch since he was 12 years old through HS. Always had a big arm, always struggled with command, always gave it his best effort. I don't know if you can overcome a natural motion by trying to train muscle memory. If it was that easy, it would have been done by now.

Again, against Purdue FW, Omaha, North Dakota St, Xavier and New Orleans.

I'm not saying Mayers would get crushed by SEC hitters, but inevitably guys will get hits on him in the SEC and the thing thats helped him out by far the most is nobody so far has gotten a hit on him in pretty limited outings. If they have, his ERA would probably be notably bad because he always has guys he leaves on when he pitches and like 3/5 times he's pitched its been 2 or 3 guys he leaves on. It's a very very dangerous game to be playing when you are facing teams who CAN hit that level of pitching some, even if its to the tune of a .200 clip, when you walk so many guys some of them wil inevitably come home if you give up even just a few hits.

Mayers had a 4.58 ERA last season but only gave up 39 hits in 70.2 IP ith a .165 BAA. I bet if you investigated into how a lot of those runs came across on him, it was his own doing with a walk or two in an inning and then just a single or something that drove guys in. He did notably give up 11 HRs which isnt nothing, and those hurt A LOT worse when there's 1-2-3 guys on base than 0-1 guy on base.
