catch the ball first without touching home plate before he can block the plate.

which is precisely what he did.

He was completely behind the plate until he caught the ball and/or the batter was out of the box.

He can’t touch or block the plate until he possess the ball. You’re wrong.

It was an atrocious call and the dude was out by 5 miles (which made it worse). The SEC rep said after the game that it was called based on the reasoning of a catcher stepping on or in front of home plate without possession of the ball or touching the batter. Neither of those happened and it has nothing to do with moving up in the box. You can move up in the box as long as you don't step on the plate, etc. He didn't step on the plate, etc.

Totally incorrect. It was the incorrect call and terrible interpretation of the rule by whoever phoned in to tell them to frick us.

It’s a balk, dead ball call. If they saw it why didn’t they immediately throw up their hands and call balk? None of them did. That means they didn’t see it when it happened.

Exactly. The USC coach probably told them that, they hadn’t thought of it, and they trusted him.

When a call is questionable, I just automatically assume the official missed it cause they usually do.
