It Will Never Be Ready In Time: New LSU Arena Edition

from Business Report
quote:
Back in March, Daily Report reported that the potential developer of LSU’s new $400 million arena was expected to submit its development plans to the LSU Board of Supervisors and the Louisiana Board of Regents for approval within 60 days.
That was according to attorney Charles Landry, who has been hired to work with the university on the project.
It’s been about 60 days since that report, so where does everything stand now?
Keli Zinn, executive deputy director of athletics and COO for LSU Athletics, tells Daily Report that Landry’s 60-day deadline isn’t going to be met, though the project is still moving forward smoothly overall.
“With a project of this magnitude, it’s taking quite a bit of time in order to work through it, but we’re still optimistic,” Zinn says. “We’re continuing to make progress.”
Zinn declined to speculate on when the arena’s potential developer, whose identity is still under wraps, might submit its plans for approval. Both the LSU Board of Supervisors and the Louisiana Board of Regents must sign off on the deal before the project can move forward.
A pool of potential developers was narrowed down to a single finalist last year.
Once operational, the arena would host sporting events for LSU as well as entertainment and music events for the Capital Region. While a location is not yet set in stone, Landry said in March that the arena would likely be constructed on the old LSU Golf Course site south of Gourrier Avenue.
The arena’s development is reshaping the future of the Raising Cane’s River Center, which is expected to shift its focus away from entertainment and toward conventions.

Honestly I think she'd prefer more NIL anyway. I have seen her interviews regarding the project and seemed to prefer the traditional route of just renovating the PMAC. I am sure she understands construction costs have made that impossible.

Since LSU is leasing the arena for 30 years, it would be nice if TAF had a major project for Alex Box. The school hasn't had a major facility project in many years now. I am sure they've paid some debts off but even after revenue sharing should be able to give the fans something.

Project is off to a great start. This will end up being a clusterF of epic proportions.

LSU has the $$ to update Alex Box. Nothing ever comes up. You think with the top program in college baseball, they would cater to the fans that have built it

I am not sure if you've been paying attention, but between horrible concessions, average facilities, and TAF squeezing every drop from the base with no love, LSU is pretty infamous for treating the base poorly.

Wade spent the first 4 years of his LSU tenure fighting with the admin for facility upgrades. In an interview a few months after he was fired he was asked if he could only have money for facility upgrades or NIL, which would he prefer? He immediately and unequivocally said "NIL". Otherwise, if you upgraded the facilities without adequate NIL money at team would consist of MMMF ("mid-major mother fu___ers") getting their asses kicked in a really nice arena.
Nice facilities used to be the main weapon in the college sports arms race. Not anymore. Players don't care about the facilities. They want to get paid as much as possible. Programs like Duke, Kansas, Purdue play in arenas older and smaller than the PMAC. I doubt they are looking build new arenas in hopes of continuing their success. They have to keep up with NIL
LSU basketball is not going to get better by simply building a new arena. Start winning big and no one will care at all about the winning taking place in the 50 year old PMAC. It will be packed.

I’m sure it will be top notch, but I can’t see a private developer putting up all the money. I think the state is going to have to be involved.

Honestly it's a no brainer to go the route LSU has to build a new arena. The university will eventually own it and doesn't have to pay a dime.
Hell, name Alex Box Raising Cane's field if Todd gives 100 for the project. Who cares about the name? I want LSU to have a baseball stadium like Baum or Dude.

Water is wet.
LSU and the state are historically bad at facilities projects.

Some of this fanbase thinks LSU has a top facility and it’s comical.

tifwiw but I am in regular contact with someone who has involved in getting the ball rolling on this new arena. That person has serious doubts it ever comes to fruition.

The sports venues need a complete overhaul. I would move T&F over to the old golf course and then build a new arena on that current site. It would be in proximity to all practice facilities and be in a prime location.

Gotta give them some time for their in-laws to set up new stealth LLCs

New football facility, athletic dining hall, baseball weight room and pitching lab, etc.
Not there's anything wrong with that, but just keep that in mind - they're going to prioritize player-side changes over fan-side changes.
Also, they're doing a shite ton of work to the actual campus right now and have plans to do more in the next decade. Those all look incredible.

It's the mid level and low level fan that they are leaving behind in baseball.

Absolutely. LSU capital projects have always just lacked vision for the future. Thats why Tiger Stadium has four different looking sides and Box is limited on expansion.
I remember ten years ago when the stand alone nutrition center was supposed to be built on site of old Box and FKA nixed it because he didn’t like that donations weren’t going towards the university.
