He had top 10 overall defenses in his 3 years as DC for LSU the first time around. He was outcoached by miss state and Missouri as he was unable to adjust to the passing schemes that they were doing. He stuck with man to man though we were getting torched in the secondary with it. Against S.C. he at least used some zone mixed in and the defense didn't look nearly as bad as it had been. Thoughts? I don't want another Kevin Steele year.

Our DBs couldn't and may still not be able to play good zone coverage. You can't call plays your team cant handle

We played a decent amount of zone on Saturday (from what I could tell on the tv copy) and they seemed to do it pretty well. And I also noticed the defense was communicating better on shifts than against Mizzou. Granted, Missou shifted way more, but there was definite improvement in communication and in our ability to play zone.

Still a ways to go, but nobody set any records on Saturday, which is nice.

We lead the conference in sacks and we are right there with interceptions. We are +6 in turnovers leading the conference.

If we can continue to improve in tackling and minimizing coverage busts...we will end up being pretty darn good.

We probably need to move some players around.

In 2005 we gave up over 500 yards to Arizona State to start the season and barely won thanks to a fake punt and miraculous throws by JR. The next game we shut down Tennessee in the first half to give up 30 and lose. The defense looked bad early on that year but ended up playing lights out. Lots of NFL talent on that team and much more than this one in my mind. So I expect him to improve weekly but get destroyed by Bama.

Dude is making scrub offenses look like world beaters. This is still the worst defense I have seem at LSU

This doesn't look like a defense you can fix this year. He either doesn't have the talent for the defense he's throwing out there or his players are going to need another year to gain enough experience to implement his ideas.

Bad quarterback play by the opposing team can make your defense look better then it is. Receivers are still wide open all over the field.

Oh I remember that now. Yeah that was bad. Maybe he's still learning the players, installing his scheme, and the COVID mess has disrupted practice as well. I've got to hope that he's learning, the kids are learning, and everyone will be better at what they do each week. I was really concerned when we made absolutely zero progress from Miss State and Missouri...Just the same as you mentioned back in 05.

We’ll look okay against this free-falling Auburn team and then get destroyed on defense by everybody else except maybe Arky

I think I’m riding the over in our last 5 games

Thank God somebody in here has a brain.

I believe we'll gradually improve. It's inexperienced, new players learning a new coaches scheme. Granted, the Gumps and Gators are gonna give us all we can handle but we just gotta keep improving.

After the first SC TD Pelini went to the defense bench with a white board drawing things up. No one was listening to him or looking. They were talking to each other like he wasn't there. It is on the film. It was not a reassuring look.

Our fans better not act like they didn’t call for Steele’s head the year he was with us.

I remember
