This isn't fast, and isn't going to "progress" into being faster.

They can get smarter, and more knowledgeable on their assignments.

But they're slow.

what has changed for bama? Saban pulled upperclassmen that were not perorming and replaced them with freshmen! Our former recuit Eddie Jackson is now starting in the secondary! Our D will progress! Every year depends on upperclassmen leadership, which we are lacking this year. Is is different every year.

I will be one of the few, I absolutely feel our D will progress. First and foremost I believe youth "hence inexperience" is playing a part as to why our defense is woefully underperforming. I do think as they continue to play games, play recognition will come with it. How much our D will improve, I don't know. But it only has to improve enough to make a few more stops, with the way our offense is playing we can win every game with some defensive improvement other than Bama. Bama our defense is going to have to play well along with our offense because it is tough to play on the road against good teams in the SEC, i.e. UGA. Also A&M is going to be tough just because of Manziel. He is one of the few QB's out there that can put a team on his back and win the game. The positive about that game is that it is in Death Valley and hopefully the fans have that place a fricking nightmare for Manziel to hear or think!!! Because it will be a 60min game and the fans are going to have to be there the entire game and be loud the entire game no matter what the score is.

No it's not crazy at all. The D will get better. It'll never be a good D, but it can achieve mediocre levels I think.

A&M has the worse Defense in the SEC and God knows how much yardage Mett will throw against them. Its a matter of shutting down Johnny Angel!!

Bama's Defense gives up 600 yards against A&M and then pitches a Shutout against Ole Miss so what changed from A&M to Ole Miss?

that's cause Bama cheated in that game.

I was disappointed in LSU's defense Saturday, but man, it's silly for any LSU fan to jump off the ship after that game. We barely lost to a good UGA team in their stadium. Hell yeah, LSU's defense is going to improve. Will it be the 2011 defense? Maybe not. But they'll get better after this experience. I guess people forgot that that 2011 defense gave up 533 yards to West Virginia. Were people complaining about that? No, because LSU won. And that was during the 4th game of the year too so you can't blame that on rust. Give UGA and Murray some credit. They just flat out played great.

Exactly!
Why can't some of the negatigers see this?

This defense will play better. Hell, they don't have to be nearly as dominating as the defenses we've had in the past because of our dominant offense. We can score and outscore everybody on the rest of our schedule. Let the season play out. Big things are ahead.

I really don't see us getting a whole lot better this season.

Honestly.

But I hope we do.

I think our D will improve and improve by a lot as the season goes. But to compare last Sat to WVU in '11 is not a fair comparison. Against WVU we got a big lead and it was largely a case of controlling the clock and not giving up quick scores. Yardage wasn't going to hurt us. Sat, we were never more than 1 score ahead (IIRC) and every possession was critical. Point being, '11 could afford to give up yards. Last week couldn't.

Given the experience issues I'd be shocked if they didn't improve. The real question is how much. I don't see them turning into a vintage LSU defense at any point but I think they can be "good" which is all we need with this offense.

Exactly! ^^^^^^^^^^^

This season, they don't have to hold teams to 15 ppg. A defense that can hold teams to even 21 ppg would be good enough this season. I believe that this defense CAN indeed get to that level. Their problem is basically inexperience. Talent is not the problem with this defense.

Yes. We suck and Chavis needs to be fired and if Les doesn't do it then he needs to be fired too. If you disagree, you are obviously a sunshine pumping troll and you need to GTFO, EAD, DIAF, and GTH!

I'm sorry, I just don't buy the inexperience argument. Look at the starters and their years in the program:

Loston - 5th year (has started games and played a ton of snaps in his career)
Martin - 3rd year (has started games and played a ton of snaps in his career
Mills - 2nd year (has started and/or played in 18 games)
Collins - 3rd year (started games and played a lot of snaps last year)
Johnson - 3rd year (has been on the D-line rotation for 3 years)
Ferguson 4th year (has been in the D-line rotation for at least 2 years)
Barrow - 4th year (3 year starter)
Allen - 4th year at LSU
Welter - 4th year
Alexander/Louis/Jones - 2nd years at LSU and ALL played last year
Rasco - 3rd year (played snaps in his first 2 years)

White is the only true freshman to start in a big spot if I recall correctly. It would be one thing to say, "well the starters perform well, but the backups struggle because of inexperience." However that's not the case, as guys who have been in this defense for at least 3 years have no clue what's going on from play to play, and have been the primary participants in the first 5 games.

All of that is well and good. However, there's a big difference between getting starters snaps and backups snaps. Additionally, many of these guys have not played together as a unit. It's one thing to plug 2-3 guys into a defense in a new season. It's another thing when you're plugging in more than HALF of the defense being new starters. Again, once they're used to playing together AND they learn from these early mistakes, we'll see improvement. Keep in mind, they really don't have to be THAT great....................just good.

I know Chavis probably likes to coach from the box because he has a birds eye view of what's going on, but I would like to see him down on the field. Just from a motivation stand point. I see the defense come off the field and they're aren't enough high fives or arse chewings for that matter going on. I bet anything if the D coord. got in your face after a blown assignment you're not going to go do it again. I just think it would help light a fire under our D if he was actually on the field.

DING DONG! I've wanting to start a new thread about this. Could not agree more.

Another reason I think we will see an improvement is they won't see that dynamic of an offense until we play them again in Atlanta
