Is it a given that Steele is switching us to a 3-4 defense next year?

I've seen this mentioned in a few places and am curious if it has been actually confirmed, just rumored based on Steele's history, or does it really just depend on this recruiting class?

Bonus question: how many ranters will explode at the thought?

We played nickel a lot this year b/c we didn't have 3 lb we trusted to put on the field, you really think we'll have more next year?

Well we used 2 linebackers but we have a slew of DEs that wouldn't be DEs in a 3-4

We played nickel a lot this year because almost no one runs 2 WR sets anymore.

To the OP, no. Steele won't be able to run a pure 3-4 or a 3-4 style defense just yet. There will be and already are 3 down man looks but it'll always be a hybrid defense.

Steele can not run his defense until he gets his players on the field. The Chief left the cupboard bare. He will need a couple of good classes to get to where he wants to be. In his case we will have to show some patience.

Not sure we have a big, giant athletic guy to clog the a-gap, either.

We will be hurting at LB so no chance of 3-4 next season. The way they are recruiting bigger d-lineman & lb's it would indicate the future is the 3-4. However, Chavis had us so light up front we needed a size upgrade in the front 7 anyways.
Steele's biggest asset is his ability to recruit. We could have a drastically different looking front seven within two recruiting cycles.

Sammy makes a good point, so it is possible. However, LSU doesn't have many DTs at this time, and in a 3-4 you basically need three to start and back ups as well.

I heard he's going to bring in Thomas Dunson to coach drop linebackers.

Looks like he wants to be able to give multiple front looks.

Gilmore is the closest we have to a true nose. He's very big.

The DL concerns are real.

But if you look at the recruiting we are heading in that direction. Lots of big bodies DLs

There is just no way; we don't have the personnel. No nose tackle. Thin at LB. And we will play more nickel because that is our best personnel set.

I don't understand why people think this. The only time nickel was the default formation was in 2010 and 2011 when Mathieu was here. The offense still dictates which set the defense must play. They're not going to play nickel against 21 personnel.

Since LB depth will be a question mark they should show more nickel looks with Donte jackson coming off the edge/covering in a Honey Badger role

Does it matter? At this point, Steele is who he is. We can expect to be like we were in 2008 and this year next year regardless of scheme.

You are aware that we finished almost exactly where the 2008 defense did this year, yes?
