He wasn’t underrated when he was playing.

Hester is almost a god on the rant but Steltz sorta goes unmentioned
Even in DBU threads

Craig was a headhunter

They're talking about underrated in the eyes of The Rant and lets face it that includes about every player pre Saban... No Steltz was not underrated by people who follow LSU football

Steltz had a hell of a motor

Yes.
Partly being in the defensive backfield in a school loaded with DBs every year and part of the ever shrinking window of recency bias, particularly online.

Yet he isn’t quite brought up like Hester, Flynn or Dorsey when that 2008 team is discussed.

I wanna say he got hurt in the first defensive series in the BCS Natl Championship and didn’t come back in. He was having a monster season and I wish he could have played the whole game. Curtis Taylor filled in nicely.
Also remember his blocked punt his freshman yr at Arizona St the first game after Katrina.

It was Hitman Harry Coleman actually. Played really well.
I don’t think Steltz is underrated. He’s well regarded as he should be, although he really only had one great season as a starter.
Most of the other great safeties we remember from this era like Clark, Laron, Jones, Reid, Jamal, Delpit started and had major impact for three years at least.
Craig is a great Tiger, made it to a second contract in the NFL, and will always be remembered as an important piece of that 07 BCSNC team.
I think he’s rated just fine

Well when you consider the UF game that alone vaulted Hester into the top echelon of most beloved Tigers. It was a monumental game that led to a NC and you couldn’t have scripted it any better for a guy like Hester to o down in history.
And he had a great overall season as well.
Steltz, while a big part of that defense, wasn’t the star of it, and never really won a game like Hester did. He also didn’t play much in the BCSCG and the D didn’t miss a beat.
Like I said earlier, he was great for that one season, but the other guys we discuss in the DBU threads were superstars for three years.
They just had a bigger impact for longer.

Steltz was a really good player. Didn't get the atta boys he should have!

I think you’re misremembering. Dicky Lyons put his helmet right on Craig’s chin.

It sounds like a Bill Brasky story from SNL, but Rummel put Steltz in at RB in the second half in 2003 vs Jesuit and he went absolutely apeshit and won them the game. Had like 170-180 yards on 7 carries or some nonsense. I was getting text updates from my friends as I was at Voodoo Fest, and the texts were pretty funny from the Jesuit perspective. Was very glad I was at Voodoo.
ETA: found it I’m assuming this is accurate it’s even more ridiculous than I thought. My friends were miserable

Craig showed his versatility by returning punts and kickoffs and by playing running back.[3] On October 31, 2003, against district rival Jesuit High School, Steltz rushed for 170 yards in the second half on seven carries and scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to lead the Raiders to a 38–27 victory

I just remember thinking he'd rather knock the shite out of someone than stop them from catching it to begin with

I know this is off topic but that Patrick Peterson/Chad Jones punt return in that video vs Moo State is one of my absolute favorites of all time. That was just two absolute studs deciding that ball was going in the fricking end zone.
Also, Jesus Christ it’s easy to forget how blazing fast Peterson was in college holy shite he hit that sideline on that opening kickoff near the 40 like it was nothing.

The punt return against UNC in 2010 is probably the fastest I’ve ever seen someone in pads move. Shot out of a damn cannon.
Not surprising he pulled both hammys on that run
