Why are the top candidates a guy who hasn’t coached in 3 years and a guy who’s only been to Omaha once in 20+ years?

You have been played. There are 16 teams still playing right now, including LSU. There will be no announcement before the teams with coaches involved are finished.
And Pat Casey has the most national titles of any person alive other than Skip Bertman. The man is a great coach. He would be an upgrade over the retiring coach.
