This is the type of stupidity you get when you don’t look at context.
I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was responding, in part, to a previous poster who said second in the division was pretty meaningless (it generally is unless it’s an indicator of an upward trajectory of a struggling program, I don’t think most see LSU as a struggling program). In any case, context is important. This year, if Bama finishes second in the West, they likely still get an invite to the playoff, particularly if Auburn wins the SEC championship game.

I can hear him now, Patrick Surtain, in case you didn't know this I just wanted to let you know we didn't have a chance to win the west in 2017 but did finish 2nd thanks to Auburn

I'm with you, finish as high up the food chain as possible. If I remember correctly we were preseason picked 5th overall in the SEC and 3rd or 4th in the West.
