Do yall think this is a good LSU team?

I personally do.

Watching the way USC played offense, knowing the coach and players they have, I wouldn't be suprised if they average 40+ppg this year. Riley has scored 39+ppg every single year he's been a head coach and this year doesn't seem any different. I thought we did a helluva job defensively.

USCs new DC is a beast. Their tackling and schematic discipline was beautiful to watch. I was aware of the turnaround Lynn made at UCLA, but I still didn't expect it to look that polished game 1.

LSU looked fine on offense most of the time. But there were some head scratchers for sure. Why was there so few outside runs? Why didn't we at least take some shots down field? They were playing a dink and dunk defense but we weren't doing anything to get them to back off of us. It was frustrating.

Defensively, I thought we played phenomenally. Our Defensive line played lights out. Our corners were surprisingly good, and were flashing elite ability at times. LBs and safeties did their job for the most part. Other than 2 or 3 plays, I think the defense played incredibly well.

I am actually really excited to see how good this team is by the time we play Ole Miss. We can still lose 1 more game and almost be guaranteed a playoff spot.

I'm still pissed we lost this game. But not pissed off at any particular part of the team, unlike last year.

You want an objective opinion but came to the rant to find it, eh?

I’m not objective, but I don’t disagree with your assessment. This is potentially BK’s best team yet and they still have every goal ahead of them (except for going undefeated). They ran into a very good USC football team this weekend and will be better for the early season challenge.

You’ll just be shot down here man. This is a doomer board. There are plenty of good things to take away from the game last night. I typically appreciate Josh Pate’s commentary, and he noted this was a battle between two (12 team) playoff contenders. It was, especially once this staff irons out some of the rather unacceptable operational issues.

I do. I think playcalling and playing not to lose with stubborn run calls lost the game in the second half. If they keep the pedal down, we win by 10. Our defense was much improved and aggressive. Sure, USC made plays and their receiving core was stellar. However, if you didn’t see a competitive lsu team that had the tools, than you’re being too objective and unreasonable l. Lots of football to be played gents.

Yes.
USC QB was poised under pressure and made plays and their WR made winning catches. Hats off to them.

I think Sloan in over his head and our overall talent is just simply not that good. I mean, the fact that we are still talking about Penn, Burns, Sage, et al is case in point. Not to mention our RB room and our WR’s. We are not elite talent.

Knock BK for sure over discipline, penalties, and lack of control. I expected BK teams to not look that low rent. Huge disappointment. Also, special teams have sucked for a while now …. Lack of attention to detail.

Ask yourself this, how many points would last years defense have given up to USC…I’ll say low 40s. So the D is 2 scores a game better

The offense won’t score as much so the net is that overall about same or little worse, so 8-4 or 9-3 seems right. But a few breaks and this schedule we could be 10-2 too

The defense is certainly improved. The offense is still good, and will get better and better this year, as Nuss gains more experience. People forget, that was his first regular season start and was prime time. It was inexplicable what BK/Sloan did in the second half to Nuss putting a muzzle on him and becoming predictable and only passing in obvious passing downs. We made mistakes offensively, and Nuss didn't complete 100% of his passes, but he did complete 75% for 300 yards and 2 scores, despite having a muzzle put on him.

If we had a schedule like OM, where we had 4 or 5 games to gain experience and confidence, this team would be very good. Pretty tough to go into an opener with an inexperienced QB, new OC, new DC, new playmakers, etc....against a good team. LSU will win the next 4, and go into the OM game as a 1 point favorite and undefeated in conference play. Tiger Stadium will be rocking.

USC will be 9-3 or 8-4. We will also be 9-3 or 8-4.

This is what we will get with Brian Kelly every year. This isn’t an opinion, this is a fact. Now let’s get used to seeing the cameras pan to BK looking like a shocked buffoon on the sideline.

Could it be that just maybe both USC AND LSU maybe pretty good? Someone had to lose ! Just happened to be LSU. I can see us with one lose going into October 11th in Tiger stadium

Are we likely better than we showed Sunday? Sure somewhat. Should it be a huge concern that our OL couldn’t run well when they had two high safeties? That no other WR showed up? Should it be a huge concern our safeties gave up a lot of big plays? Or that our LBs couldn’t find the TE until after he caught the ball?

Unfortunately, this is an extremely talented team and our 10 million dollar coach blew it

You do realize losing only 1 game with 11 games to play is not an easy task. There is a reason we have finished 9-3 the previous two years when we lose the opening game. Because it is very hard to go 7-1 in the SEC.

6-2 is achievable but that leaves us again at 9-3 which would be outside the playoff. And to be honest 5-3 is the more realistic goal.

I do not think the net is worse. Having a D that can get stops is something we did not have last year. You are judging an offense based upon a very vanilla game plan where they wouldn't allow us to open it up. Nuss is going to be a good one. He, on average, should throw 300+ a game and finish with 4000 yards passing, assuming he stays healthy. Once they let him start taking shots downfield, it will open up the running game. Remember, Burrow was not that good in his first several starts at LSU, in his 4th year, as a first time starter. JD was not that good his first year at LSU, in his 4th year at starting (but now I do believe BK did to him what he is doing to Nuss in his first year, beating the drum so much on no ints that they are scared to throw it).

OM will tell the tale. I think LSU will win that game and flip the season for us. OM is WAY overrated, and will be even moreso when they come to BR after play essentially 5 cupcakes to start the season....with a lower level SEC team mixed in.

If you want an objective opinion...you should have visited this board right after the loss. Those people are the smartest & most objective posters this board has to offer.

Trust me. Those people know more than anyone. They're not stupid at all.

while the sarcasm is obvious, most objective people realized what BK/Sloan did in the second half calling the offense, which ultimately led to the loss. Yes, we made mistakes that you see early in the year...as expected...but when we went up 17-13 and had a few stops of D afterwards, BK/Sloan decided to literally go incredibly conservative instead of taking our shots to put it away. It was a lot like Les would have done, minus the good D. They put Nuss in predictable passing downs, where in the first half they were throwing a lot on first and second downs....it made a huge difference in the offensive productivity.

There were two good teams playing. One lost.

Both will have good years imho.

Both have a shot at the playoffs.

Tiger fans are bitches sometimes.

No, it's not. Go rewatch the game now that the emotions are over. The same defensive problems we had last year are still present, and the same mistakes are being made by senior players. We are also still forcing players like Perkins to be something that he isn't. He's either flat footed trying to decide if he needs to Blitz or if he should fall back into coverage. His blitzes are not great and he got manhandled and pushed into his own guys multiple times. I know everyone sees his elite speed, but that only works when you come untouched.

Nuss still has work to do. The same problem he has 3 years ago of throwing off his back foot while falling away when he "feels pressure" still happened about 4 times. That almost led to two picks but we got lucky. Our WR depth isn't great either. I expect more 2 TE sets moving forward.

Our offense line with no push against USC scares the hell out of me as well. We should be dominating this year.

Can we still go 10-2? Sure. But we are going to have to play perfect ball from here on out, which I don't think we are capable of on the defensive side.

I'm being as objective as I can be:

The personnel we have for the secondary is just not there to compete for that 10th/11th win and a playoff spot. The tackling and discipline (which can improve) remain very poor.

Offensively, Nuss did a good job through 3 quarters of distributing the ball and taking what the defense gave him. The entire offense melted away late, mostly due to playcalling.

There is no "go to" guy on offense (and Nuss isn't JB or JD yet), nor does the offense have anything like an identity. It feels like a collection of parts, not a cohesive unit.

The vaunted OL was very underwhelming. When we needed 3 yards on a run, we got 2. I've heard this music before.

Bottom line: Good teams find a way to win that game. LSU didn't, so draw whatever inference you like.
