re: I expect an OC that runs a spread, up tempo offense, that can get the play in in time....

Also spread is just a philosophy. Plenty of teams play big boy smashmouth football out of a spread
Not only that, big boy smashmouth football is actually more effective out of the spread because it opens up the middle of the LOS for more wide-open running lanes especially at the second level. Think opposite of Les Miles.

Balanced isn't 50% run, 50% pass. Balanced is spreading it out to all your playmakers no matter the position. That way the defense can't key in on one player. If you're 50% run then you're more than likely giving half of your offensive touches to 1 guy in the running back position. There's nothing balanced about that. Read what Mike Leach says about what balanced offenses look like

There is nothing wrong with the toss dive Les used to run, you just have to be able to throw the ball too for it to work.
Nothing wrong with running off tackle, just don't do it when the defense is expecting it.
So sure, run off tackle sometimes, but don't telegraph it. Use 4 wideouts to spread the defense to show pass ... then run off tackle.
Les' problem (among others) was that he ran the toss-dive out of an obvious run formation, with 2 TEs and only one WR. The defense knew it was coming and therefore it was easy to stop.
Having a run/pass balance is important, but what's equally important is to keep the defense guessing which one is coming.
Les was a moron.

his offense at Cincy was a hyper up-tempo, 4-wide vertical spread
Exactly. They were 8th in the nation in passing ypg in 2009.

Expect big boy ball, a running back that will be a leader, and a balanced passing attack.
It can only get so erect. Tired of being a finesse team.
