this. Why? IMO this summer will help this kid become our everyday starting SS or second baseman. He was hitting late in the year. He will only get better as his confidence grows.

He has to hit. He was a liability at the plate all year. He had good streaks here and there

He finished the season with a .221 average, that is terrible

If he can’t hit, he will not play. His glove is incredible, but not enough to mask his offense. Hoping he can improve with an off-season here, Maybe a year under his belt will help

He will improve. In fairness to him, the plan was never for him to start this year. He wasn't ready and had quite a learning curve, offensively that is

Didn't they say the same thing about Nola?

Wrong, because of this

quote:

His glove is incredible,

If he is the one weak spot in the line up, hitting 225-.250 then he is fine to play based on his defense alone.

Nola, Robertson. The list goes on and on, but some people never learn.

Pitching and defense should be outstanding in 2019.

This.

Mainieri threw him to the wolves (didn’t really have a choice), but it gave a true freshmen a full year in the toughest conference. I’m sure it had a huge impact on him going forward.

This was known when he was recruited
No one expected him to start this season & he was thrown into some very high expectations

I understand the expectation that hughes will hit better like stevenson, nola, robertson, etc.

The only thing that gives me pause is that those guys hit well well in high school...hughes was only a pretty good hitter in high school

Nola greatly improved his bat after his freshman year. I didn’t say hughes needs to sit right away you jackwagon. I said he needs to improve offensively

And When Robertson took over at short he was always around a 300 average, granted he was a junior. Again I didn’t say hughes needs to quit baseball and leave our program. Hard to imagine He will continue to play if he stays around a 220 average, all I’m saying

Hughes hit 360 with one homer and 17 rbi

In high school, that’s not that great. Especially for guys going to major programs

Even if he ends up never getting to a .270 avg, he will be an asset to the team going forward as long as he can start laying down bunts with consistency.

He might not start but he would be a valuable player to have during the season when guys get nicked at the very least.

Yup

Those guys had hit well before.

I can’t even find Hughes high school stats, but sounds like he’s never hit. LSU shouldn’t have to settle on him if they don’t have to. Especially if someone else is struggling just as much. Our 8-9 combo was atrocious at the end of the season.

Sac bunts/hits don’t count towards his average, argument invalid

Nope. Their fans aren’t happy about it either.
