i took my first child at 5 months to the 2007 va tech game. it was a mistake.

took her back last year to the vandy game in nashville. she had no interest in the game and colored most of the time. i'll try again at age 6 i think.

I was going to say old enough to stay the whole game...but that eliminates a lot of people.

The old enough to walk is a good rule of thumb though.

Its my daughters 7th birthday this weekend. I am bringing her to her first game tomorrow and together with some friends we are staying overnight in our RV. Though she has been to many tailgate partys I never thought she was old enough to fully enjoy a game till now. I know it is different for everybody and I will definitely be bringing my son sooner.
However I am so excited for tomorrow and cant wait to show her, all the things that I know she is gonna love. The Band, Mikes compound, the cheer leaders and Golden girls! Geaux Tigers!

I found out at around 18 why I used to always carry the jackets into the games for my parents and their friends. I used to get so excited thinking I was a big boy for "helping out the adults."

They were using me. The flasks were hidden inside the jackets.

I remember going to my first game when I was four. We used to go see the ostriches when there was an ostrich farm before the game. Great experience.

Last month, I took my 18 month old daughter to a game.

A high school football game.

It wasn't easy. Had to put her in the Ergo so she couldn't run loose. She liked the band so we hung out by the band for a while. Had to go down on the track by the end zone to get close enough for her to pay attention to any of the action on the field. But she likes football. Taught her to seal clap like Les Miles and she says "fookball" whenever she sees a game on TV.

But I'm glad we picked a high school game. We only stayed for the first half because it was past her bedtime and she was getting very restless and just wanted to run all over the place. Would have been a huge waste of money to go to a game down in Corvallis or Eugene (I'm a long way from Baton Rouge).

My advice is to tell your buddy to get a sitter. 3 or 4 is the earliest you want to take a toddler to a game. My first college football game as a kid was at 4 years old. Earlier than that and they won't remember it when they're older and they'll be very restless trying to run around. Toddlers yearn to be free and don't like being forced to sit for long periods. An hour in church is her limit.

it depends on the kid. My daughter went to her first LSU game at the tender age of four and clad in her LSU cheerleader outfit. She remembers it, and to make me feel better, I think embellishes the memory. But, who knows?

Apart from rare people such as my precocious daughter, I'm guessing 8 or older for boys, 7 for girls.

At 18 months, be ready to leave before half time and bring something to keep the little one occupied. They will get into the exciting plays, but won't be able to last long. I think mine were about 7 or 8 before they stopped asking what happened every time there was cheering.

6 years is about the lower limit. And you will not make it through the whole game.

I think that is a very good age because you remember it and appreciate it a whole lot more. Around that age you are begining to play football and watch football on tv.

That's the best age IMO. I can remember my dad taking me to a Braves game when I was probably 8 or 9 and I can remember that sense of "Woah!" when I walked out of the tunnel and saw all of the people in the stands.

Brought my son to his first one when he was three, a non-conference cupcake. Been taking him to a couple every year since, but he's a football freak and has been since he was 2. Even took him to the 2007 Florida game when he was 5 (2 months from being 6). He loves it and wants to stay to see the players shake hands after the game, no matter what the score is. Then again he's been playing competitive tackle football since he was 6, so he's really into the game probably a little more-so than the average kid. My daughter is 7 and all she wants when we go to a game is some cotton candy, then she's ready to go
