How much do sprint workouts really do for speed?

There is a set limit on every persons body. Great athletes are born, not made. If you are built to run a 4.8 40, you aren't going to turn that into a 4.4 with any workouts.

Sprint workouts do help reduce speed, however, it helps with explosiveness as well. Elusiveness will come from footwork drills as well as flexibility. Reduction in speed also comes from running with proper form.

I figured as much, I just was hoping Myles could turn is 4.9 (estimate) to a 4.7 or so.

meh, you can run a lean diet and work sprint drills and weights to get your speed up
when i was a youngin going through a speed and strength program i went from the low 5's to a 4.8

Sprint workouts aren’t for increasing speed as much as they are for conditioning. There are all sorts of different drills designed for speed.

I didn't say that it was impossible to train yourself to run faster. I'm saying that each individual has a max limit that they can reach, and that's it. It's also a pretty safe assumption that LSU is doing everything to maximize their players weight, speed, agility, conditioning, etc.

Of course you can improve your speed up to a point with training, but it doesn't all ways translate to football speed or elusiveness on the field.
Players do what they can to lower their 40 time so that they look good at the combine: a 4.6 guy might get his 40 time down to sub 4.5 to help his stock on paper, but does it really make him a better player?

I’ve seen speed coaches work for teenagers since it’s usually muscularity and mechanics. But, if you don’t have fast twitch muscles, you probably won’t gain much speed.

Speed is a function of stride length and frequency. Training for explosiveness can increase efficiency of both, as long taught by speed experts like Tom Shaw, and even the late great "Boots" Garland.
Quickness and the ability to be elusive can be increased by drills but must be accompanied by a % of fast twitch muscles. THere is some research that some slow twitch can be converted to fast, but it is overwhelmingly genetic.
