If I remember correctly, the hurricane game was Kentucky. I came down from the game as a USM student and had to make a last minute decision whether to stay in BR or go back to Hattiesburg. The storm looked like it was gunning for BR, so I drove back to H'burg late that night only to find the hurricane shift toward my apartment.

Game I refer to (Idaho on Sept. 26th)was right before Georges hit on Sept. 28 in Biloxi/Mobile area. I remember making preperations while listening to us destroy Idaho that Sat. night!

Perhaps UK game was another storm that year?

There were about 4 storms that came into the gulf in September-October that year. I remember cause I was a senior in high school and just got my first vehicle. Had to evacuate 3 of the first 4 weekends I had it. ( I lived on grand isle so yeah we have to leave for pretty much every storm )

It was my freshman year.

The parties and sex were great.

Football, not so much.

You appear to be correct. My memory has betrayed me.

Yeah it was closer then I gave credit, I think we had some lucky TD catch (Ricardo Washington?)to tie it, maybe just seemed game was always away from us due to all the plays QC kept making!

We had the ball near midfield mid to late 4th qtr. down 27-21. Cecil Collins was unstobbable, but we decided to play off that on a 3rd and 2 and run a bootleg with Herb that failed.

We decided to punt on 4th down, typical Dinardo conservatism, and it went in the end zone with UGA starting on 20. on a 3rd and 4 Booger came through and hit Carter in the mouth right as he released the ball. To Carter's credit he threw a sideline pass to a pretty well-covered receiver to keep the drive alive and the Dawgs then ran out the clock.

But to the original question, we were the best team in the West, but internal dissension on the coaching staff, combined with Dinardo's paranoia doomed that team after that excruciating loss.

2008 was basically a repeat of 1998 10 years later but we were able to win a couple more close games.

Ha! you are correct! I'm an idiot.

However, the Booger/Carter think at the end is accurate.

I remember being at that game and Quincy Carter having the game of his life. He threw a pile of completions before having a miss. Georgia was stacked with good players, as they also had Champ Bailey, Stroud on the DL, and a couple of others who had some NFL time. Booger just didn't have enough help to stop Carter and UGA pulled out the win and the collapse was on.

We had some good players on D besides Booger. Ryan Clark and some others I can't recall at this time, but there was shite going on with the staff that was festering and that game blew the lid off it.

Tepper was a step down from Reese no question. But IMHO the real problem was Baldwin was butt-hurt that he didn't get the DC job and from day one made it his mission to undermine Tepper. The Georgia game gave him the in he needed to tip the scales and IMHO he used that to effectively sabatoge the rest of the season.

They allowed 22 or more points in 7 of 11 games. The defense was not good enough.

Mark Roman, Wesley, Charles Smith, Thomas Dunson, Johnny Mitchell, Jarvis Green, Raion, Clarence Leblanc. damn shame Tepper couldn't craft a better D than that.

Drop linebacker was the buzzword. Basically a nickel-back, but that's not what Tep called him and it caused a shite-storm.

Now he did play his corners 10-15 yards off the receiver too much and wasn't Joe Lee Dunn aggressive, no question. But he didn't have a chance given what was happening within the defensive staff.

I guess Dinardo could've gotten rid of Baldwin, but I think by the time it became apparent Baldwin's motives it was too late.

Ahhh, the Lou Tepper fiasco. Great offense and crappy defense but a defense not without some decent talent.
UGa- We made Quincy Carter a legend. His quote was "we just took what they were giving us....and they were giving us everything"
Bama game was one of worst memories. We tore them a new a-hole the whole game and fluke plays (plus a drop of sure TD by A Booty) spelled doom.
We destroyed the SEC West Champs Miss State.
Dinardo's epic failure!

I think part of the reason LSU's been so good in close games since Miles took over is because of how bad we were in close games in 98 and 99. Everything always comes around. Thank you Higher Football power babay.

Horribly infuriating season. Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Notre Dame--- we lit them up pretty good offensively. Our (Tepper's) defense looked like a preteen girls' soccer team was asked, 5 minutes before kickoff, to come play as LSU's defense.

Got to a point that year, once we had to settle for a FG, you just knew it was over. No margin for error at all for a potent offense.

any year you loose to Miss St AND Kentucky in football in the same year, is a year not worth discussing.
