A better question is this: With Saban or Miles (with their staff) as the coach, what is the 98 team's record? I'd say 9-2.

Probably so. Recruiting is maybe the biggest part of the HC job, but it's definitely not the only part. Got to make good hires and keep everyone on the same page.

probably one of the more underacheiving teams in lsu history. had talent but our defense was always out of place with tepper's read and react crap. thomas dunson was a fricking idiot. was my sr year at lsu.

My senior year too

Everybody thought we had finally woken up and figured things out when we wrecked Mississippi State 41 to 6. Keep in mind this is when State was good, or pretty good anyway.

The next week was Ole Miss in Oxford. I remember the group of little black kids at a convenience store on the way up there asking "you with LSU?"And when we said yes, they're like "go up there and beat those rebel asses."

Once we got there, because of what happened the previous week against state, the Ole Miss fans were like "don't beat us too bad today" and then we went out and stunk up the joint for 3 1/2 quarters. We actually gave up and missed the comeback that forced overtime, heard it on the radio in the car, and then had to listen to the Tuberville press conference when he just insulted LSU and said our players were obviously out of shape and all this BS.

That team had a hell of an offense. Defense was pretty bad, though. But was tough vs. Alabama except for the final 4 minutes.

Would have loved to see them play 12-0 Tulane that year. Woulda been a hell of a game.

when we wrecked Mississippi State 41 to 6.

Even LSU's bad teams beat State. Remember 2-9 1992 team? I think one of those wins was a blow out vs. Miss. St. Go figure.

We've only lost to State once in 20 years and that was Josh Booty's fault.

Next week UGA and a young QB Quincy Carter beat us and game really wasn't as close the score

LSU should have won that game. The defense could not stop Quincy Carter. That game was the beginning of the end for Dinardo. So frustrating.

We lost to the bulldogs because the RB bounced at the 2 yard line into the endzone and it was called a TD

That still pisses me off. He hit the turf and squiggled across the goal line. No way that's called a td with review.

the hell it wasn't. it was 21-21 at the half. we just couldn't get the ball back from em one more time in the 4th qtr to try a game winning drive. Carter was making plays to keep their last drive alive with Booger all over him.

That was one of the best games of the season (even thought LSU lost). The teams went back and forth. LSU pulled within one, but couldn't get Quincy Carter off the field in the 4th

DiNardo is a good man, but better off making Italian food

I was a freshman and remember playing pool in the university commons rec room a few weeks into the season and there was a segment on espn listing teams that were "still in the hunt for the fiesta bowl (MNCG)". We were in the top 3. Yeah, that didn't work out.

I still have ulcers when I think about that season. Great offense, no defense

i get ulcers thinking about dinardo's refusal to fire tepper. it cost him his job and pretty much his career, esp as a hc. i liked dinardo and if he would have corrected his mistake and hired a good dc, he would have been a damn good coach. it was he (and his staff) that turned around lsu's recruiting. saban come in with a pretty talented team hungry for victories.

He needed to go. He was never going to take us to the top, regardless of who his DC was.

Didn't Lou Tepper once say he would need 4 years to fully implement his defense ?
I remember thinking "he ain't the guy for the job!"

Doesn't matter. Dude had it all wrong, philosophically and schematically.

I'd bet they were the best 4-7 team in history, no joke. Maybe that isn't saying much. With an average DC they win s bunch of games and dinardo isn't fired as quickly.

Remember Idaho was the "hurricane" game with Georges approaching.

If I remember correctly, the hurricane game was Kentucky. I came down from the game as a USM student and had to make a last minute decision whether to stay in BR or go back to Hattiesburg. The storm looked like it was gunning for BR, so I drove back to H'burg late that night only to find the hurricane shift toward my apartment.

I remember listening to that SEC radio show every evening. Even during preseason and the first few games Max Howell kept commenting about how vanilla LSU's defense was--even with all that talent. He knew something was very wrong.
