Mett has the size and arm to be elite. But he needs work in the areas of pocket awareness, quicker decision making and showing more accuracy on the intermediate to deep pass.
In his defense, he didn't have a healthy o-line, the receivers had the dropsies and (IMO)we telegraphed too many plays based on formation and personnel.
This season, the line looks strong, we have a couple more deep threats in Dural and Q Leslie and it appears we are going to incorporate the RB and TE more in the passing game (DeSean Smith will be another big addition), which should help give Mett more options, especially in checkdowns, and will give defenses more to have to account for.
My concern with Mett is how serious and dedicated is he. I read conflicting reports. Some suggest he is studying film and throwing with receivers; others saying he's doing just enough to get by. Not sure what is the truth. But I do know for any QB to be really good, he needs to have a great work ethic and be a student of the game, not just have a strong arm and good size.

How good can Mettenberger be?

LSU plays Clemson in the title game and destroys them.
I think it will be Ohio St.... And we know how that went last time.......

I can't get that Clemson game out my mind. Fourth quarter, 2nd and 6, Mett rolls right and misses a wide open Landry. That play could have made our season !!

Mett completely shitted on the Bama defense.
He tore their secondary apart. Made Milliner and Belue his bitches. The receivers also stepped it up big time. The sky's the limit if they play consistently like that this season

he just has to be better than Jefferson…. he's shown flashes, but he has become consistent….

All sec isn't too much to hope for.

Mettenberger has the physical talent required to be well above average.
that's the part that I question. He does have good size and a strong arm. Does he have any other physical talent or skill set that would make him an above average QB or is that all that is needed? I think that he was coming on at the end of last season and has probably improved a great deal with a full season in the SEC under his belt. I think that he is going to be a lot better than he was last season and with a good o-line, better receivers, and a new O coordinator, the passing game could be dangerous for the first time in many years.

Im hopeful he can be a very solid player, but I think his potential is far from being reached. He's had soooooo many different OC's and quarterback coaches. If he gets into a team in the NFL and is able to have some stability and quality coaching. Then learn as a 2 or 3 he'll have a shot in a few years with his arm strenth and size.

Aaron Murray and AJ McCarron. 3rd team all SEC isn't to much to hope for.

Perhaps he outperforms those two?
He'll get chance barring injury to go head to head.
Have some faith silly willy.

Trying not to lose is how. A hallmark of how this team has been coached on many occasions.

Can anyone point to any specific examples of Quarterbacks that had average Junior years, and then had All Conference type Senior years?

Would it be too much to ask for him to be consistently average? That's all we need.

Jason Campbell immediately comes to mind, though he was less than average his junior year. He also had a different OC every year I believe.

We have all seen how high Mett's ceiling is. He made some great throws last year and has showed excellent poise in the pocket. If he improves as a leader and shows more consistency we will do well this year.

Yeah Jason Campbell for sure.
But the jump Jamarcus made from his RS sophomore year in 05 to his junior year in 06 is what I'm thinking could be very very possible.
JR was solid in 05. Stats very similar to Mett last year.
But in 06 he was off the charts good. Mett has that type of potential imo though his ceiling isn't quite as high.

if he hits a few more of his deep balls this year and our guys get a bit more consistent catching the routine balls he will have a great year. we have guys that can break loose with the ball in their hands.

Hopefully Cam will not have to max protect and run more than one option on pass plays. Too many times last season we ran plays where Mett only had 1or 2 options to throw to. Open it up Cam
