I always hated Joe dean because when I was waiting tables at City Club when I was 19 he was one of the few people that would come in for breakfast at like 7 am. Id be hungover as shite and he wouldnt take a menu and he would just give me a super complicated and specific order that of course id frick up.

As a student, I had to sleep in a tent on the southeast ramp of the P-Mac for 4 nights to go see LSU and Shaq vs Duke and Laettner. Yes, we had to plan. And baseball regionals weren't easy to come by either.
Did we win?

I had just moved to Louisiana in 1990 and attended the Kentucky game. I sat in the then only upper west deck which was barely half full.

Yep different days of LSU football. You could pull up to campus an hour before the game, park right next to the stadium, break out a box of Popeyes chicken for the tailgate, throw the football in the parking lot for 30 min, then go into the game and watch LSU play. Crazy what the whole thing became since 2000.
Yes!!! Almost exactly what we did several times! Bad part is I was in school from 87-92, and don’t remember the first game of any that curly coached other than the pigs fly game. Totally a blur after that 87 gator bowl against South Carolina when archer was coach.
I do remember going straight to the stadium, eating in the truck and throwing the ball before us getting blasted by Tennessee. That’s the only game I remember from his tenure

We parked in the lot behind the EE building, drank a few beers and walked over to the stadium a few minutes before kickoff. Stayed until the game was over and were able to drive out of the campus within 15 minutes of getting to the car.

You can blame Brett Favre for the Hallman hire.
Gil Brandt of the Dallas Cowboys endorsed Curley and Hit and Run Joe ran with it.

Ironically the ones who did show up for the games stayed to the bitter end for the most part
That’s the honest truth. I got season tickets immediately after I graduated and still stay until the clock reads 00:00. Nowadays I can’t hardly get people to attend with me because they all want to leave at halftime.

I wonder what top tier SEC coaches like Spurrier and Stallings were making at the same time ?

Colson convinced Sonny Devillier to place us “mature” law students as a buffer btw paying fans and the rowdy students, back when students had midcourt seats. Now students are stuck behind the goal, and the paying fans have those great seats.

Before Nick Saban was hired, we were a stepping stone job. High mid tier job at best. Not coveted by anyone but a good spot for someone to come in and have a few decent years and move on. Maybe.
Then around 1998, a group gathered to make a push to elevate our program. It was slow at first but gained steam. Boosters stepped up and funded what got Saban here but it was Saban who designed the framework. Saban wasn’t all that well known but he was certainly an up and comer and he had a strong vision. When he got to town and looked over things he had a lot of demands.
2 big areas he required to be addressed- Fund improvements to facilities, hire dozens more people. Admin, coaches, and other support workers were needed. LSU stepped up with the help of the boosters and got it done.
Saban got hired to an amount that was staggering at the time. Additionally the support staff was a large increase. We hadn’t paid anyone anything close to what Saban got. It was a leap of faith but the belief was to build it, we’d have success and it’d all be worth it. It worked.
What we have today can all be attributed to Saban for his framework and the boosters and board for agreeing to go out on that limb and do what it takes.
It really is night and day.

For Curly Hallman‘s last game, no one wanted to go to the game and I did so I loaded up the motorhome and went out there.
I was only one of five motorhomes in the motorhome parking lot next to the stadium. Normally there were probably 100.
I thought to myself how much economic activity that normally happens for a game all through Baton Rouge that wasn’t happening.
Because of that, I thought there’s no way they keep this coach

A positive curveball about Curley, at least he recruited a #1 SEC defense and the most productive front 4 this programs ever had.
