Looking forward to the 2024 season…. Knowing Nuss Bus will start (knock on wood, sign of the cross, etc….), (Lord knows Myles Brennan tripped on his own flip flop) how does the rest of our QB room look? I’ll hang up and listen….,

Well, they make good throws and bad throws and they run around and they read the defenses and they try really hard and it’s only the second spring practice.

Swann is a very capable backup. We are royally screwed if both go down

That will change quickly. He wasn’t brought here to be third string. Only dummies like Walker Howard transfer somewhere to be third string.

Well, we’re one practice in.

Collins has been there for a year & Swann has been there for a couple months.

Swann is obviously the favorite to be the backup

The best scenario is that Swann is an insurance policy we never have to use and Ricky Collins takes a lot of snaps in game time situations. Collins is the more talented passer and who could take the keys in the event Nuss has a stellar year and declares. It will be tricky for he staff to navigate trying to get Swann and Collins reps without stunting Collins growth, but having Swann ready to go if we need him.

I don’t think coaches are making promises for backup QB spots.

IMHO I believe that if Nuss doesn’t win the Heisman something is wrong. I also believe if Nuss doesn’t throw 12 TDs & 0 ints in the first 3 games, then obviously Swan can come in and easily shoot up to top 5 in Heisman watch. Now I’m just basing this off 4hrs of practice, but if you give me 2 more hrs of drills I’ll have my real analysis. I’m pretty good at this but even the best of us need 6 good hours of down & out drills to make an expert opinion. Now I’ll hang up and get back to scouting. I hope this eases your mind.

I don't know if I agree with all of this, but some for sure. I think Swann is obviously the backup, especially if Nuss goes down for any extended period of time. Even more so if it's early in the season. However, since Collins redshirted last year, and Swann hasn't yet, I bet the hope will be to redshirt Swann if all goes well and Nuss stay relatively healthy. So, though Swann would be the backup if a backup had to play meaningful snaps, I think Collins would go in and finish out blowouts and maybe come in for a play if Nuss's helmet accidentally comes off and has to come out for a play. They're not gonna waste 1 of Swann's 4 games (to keep his redshirt) on 1 play or in a blowout early in the season.

I know a lot of people will poo poo the need for Swann to redshirt with Nuss having another year and Underwood coming in next year (along with Collins and Hurley). But shite happens (not just with injuries but unexpected transfers in the NIL/portal age) and you'd rather Swann have an extra year and not need it than the other way around. Like I'm sure we're all extremely thankful now that Nuss didn't play in that Texas Bowl to maintain his redshirt. Not only could he be back next year as a 5th-year SR., 2nd-year starter allowing Underwood to sit and learn, but I think the chances of Nuss having stuck around without that extra year would have been pretty close to 0%. He may would have stuck around for Jayden's 1st year, but as soon as he announced he was coming back, Nuss would have been immediately in the portal and thrown the deuces.

But just watching the drills, I think the QB room is actually in a really good spot. Nuss is about as experienced as any 1st-year starter could possibly be, and Swann has got to be by far the most experienced backup in the SEC. There may be guys that wind up as backups that have started more games, but I doubt any will have started more P5 games, and Swann's starts are all in the SEC. And I think Collins has a chance to be pretty good himself. It might not be at LSU (but it might, like I said, shite happens), and it might not be early this year, but I think he's a good enough athlete with really good traits that if he had to start a game later in the season due to injury, he will be far enough along to in his development to give us a chance.

I was impressed with Hurley physically. I thought he was shorter than he is, so that was a pleasant surprise, and he looked like he belonged. I don't think we want a 17-year-old anywhere near meaningful SEC snaps, but shite would have to have gone really wrong if we're down to our 4th string QB anyway.

Behind a great OL I look for Nuss and whoever backs him up, probably Swan to have a huge year passing. But, I think we will see a lot of KJ and JW running the ball more. Either way the offense will average 35+ this year. If we shore up the defense LSU could be in the NC conversation late in the year.

Great take. I hadn't thought about Swann still having a redshirt available. Even more reason for Collins to paly in mopup duty. The QB management will definitely be a task, but I'm sure BK has a plan. What a great problem to have.

Nuss, Swann or Collins then Hurley. I'm assuming Hurley will be red shirted. It will be interesting between the Swann/Collins/Hurley show, just to see who they are. Practice has just begun.
