In order to understand defense, one must understand offense.

What makes a great defensive coordinator is one that understands the ins and outs of a great offense. I think Dave will do a good job, he just has to surround himself with good coaching. The question is can he teach the fundamentals/technique to a good offense. That's when he will lean on a good OC.

, a college D Coordinator knows nothing about offense.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Need to know what it is to know how to defend it.

He’ll do very well imo. Probably the best coach in the big 12

There is no way to know.
Being a head coach requires different skills, traits and style than being a coordinator. Aranda is certainly detailed oriented and knows x and o but how is he at administration, pressing the flesh, salesmanship etc.
I’m more inclined that he will struggle as the head man.

I agree. At LSU Aranda went out of his way to always avoid the spotlight as much as possible. Now he is going to be living in the spotlight while doing something other than just defense. I'm betting he is going to be miserable as hell. Good luck to him, though.

He gave his first presser here yesterday and said all of the right things. You cannot survive at LSU as head coach without being a big personality (unless you have a Faustian Wager like Saban). There is not the same culture at Baylor. The facilities at Baylor are very good, and the student party environment at Baylor is much better than what people think. He can recruit players here. He won't get the 4 and 5 *s LSU does, but enough talent to create headaches for the rest of the conference.

I think he will be a 7-5 type coach. He is not a great recruiter and his ultimate role is a NFL DC.

And we just cranked out the best offense in college football history with a head coach that specializes in defensive line play.

Better hire a great recruiter with charisma to offset his deficiencies in that department

I don’t see him having the personality of being a lead recruiter and it will only be worse going from LSU to Baylor.

That being said, he only really has to stop Oklahoma and that conference is his. He won’t have the players he had @ LSU though so

I think Baylor hit their ceiling. Sure their expectations are different but I just don’t see him having success as a HC there.

He will do as good as you can at Baylor.
As good as you can do at Baylor... that's pretty damn good

Since 2010, Baylor has 3 11 win seasons, 2 more 10 win seasons, and another 4 with 7-8 wins. They did go 1-11 a couple years ago, but have rebounded nicely.

He won’t do very well. He just isn’t wired to be a head coach. See Bo Pelini for reference

Name me 1 defensive coordinator turned head coach that succeeded.

I’ll hang up and listen

ETA: Nick Saban made his name as a DB coach. He was a DC for the browns for 3 years.

He couldn’t handle the DC job here, he’s a bum who should have been fired and left in Oxford.

Think he'll do alright, just needs good hires for assistants.

Well here's the dumb statement of the week . To everyone saying he can't succeed because he lacks emotion and can't recruit are so shortsighted. There are multiple ways someone can become a fantastic coach. He has been apart of multiple successful coaching staffs so he certainly has knowledge on how he wants to approach being a head coach.

3 pages before a Bo Pelini reference, I thought for sure that would be first page.

I think he will do better than Pelini but not by much, he has faced a few Big 12 teams already so he knows what he’s getting into. Funny he went to go match up against Les, I look forward to watching that game tbh.

He will find more success but he was at the mountain top with this past National Champion LSU Tigers, never going to get old saying that again.

Im leaning your way but what if he hires a badass OC? Might do well. The area where I'm doubtful is recruiting. He might struggle if he doesn't get at least two guys that are stellar recruiters.

God knows.

As Coach O has demonstrated, you have to be a good manager and surround yourself with other good coaches. You’re only as good as your worst coach. It’ll be your weakest link and can be the difference between a good team and a bad team.

Ask Gerry DiNardo how important it is to have a competent defensive coordinator or Les Miles a decent offensive coordinator.

Many head coaching careers have been ruined by bad position coaches or coordinators.

I think in order to be a good defensive coordinator, you probably have to know a lot about offenses.

I’m pretty sure he knows offenses well.
