As most others have already mentioned, the site layout is key.
Although the vertical stack of thumbnails on the homepage looks downright terrible, the forums look sleek and "clean".
Tidefans, Texags, and others still maintain that disheveled look from the late 90s.

I agree. I visit other sites from time to time and they are really hard to navigate.

I think the admins get a couple of down on their luck people to log in as controversial posters and start infinite arguments on this QB v that QB, this coach v. that ex coach, running v. passing, etc. etc. 
Seriously though ... the layout is excellent. And the relaxed modding, while it sometimes leads to excrutiating and pretty senseless arguments based on questions of opinion, generally keeps the board moving along quickly.
