In the field and at the plate?
Going to be ok at shortstop until Smith returns?

He handled his position very well. Did fine with the bat, too.

Killed it. Made several nice running in plays with solid throws to first. Hit a piss missile down the 3rd base line and barreled up a ball or two.
I was impressed. Also broke up a double play very well.
Very baseball smart.

I was about to edit my post and say, you could definitely tell he knew the game inside and out.
Perfect bunt as well. I mean perfect.

Gained in the field IMO, just not Smith’s power at the plate. All is not lost...

Keep him at SS and put Smith at 3rd when he returns.

Exactly. I don’t think Smith should lose his SS spot or be given Slaughter’s position based on one game, which seems to be what many are suggesting.

Maybe put him at second when smith returns if he keeps out performing Broussard at the plate.

I think its more about fielding our best lineup. I think Smith is a good shortstop, Hughes just looks more polished in the field at short and Smith is better at 3rd than Slaughter. CPM said that Slaughter was our best fielding first baseman so if Hughes is still playing a solid SS and being serviceable at the plate I think you've got to keep him there and make the changes and roll with it.

Look if Hughes is consistent keep him at SS and move Slaughter to 1st base and Smith back to 3rd base when he returns. I would either DH Webre or play him in the outfield. Keep Broussard at 2nd base.

If Hughes contines to play well, PM will keep him there and defintely move Josh back to 3rd with Slaughter and Webre platooning at 1st imo.

The plus side at this point is that we have a lot of depth at every position at this point. Even with Josh down, we have some guys that can move around the infield. (Especially Slaughter)

We'll need all the offense and feilding we can get at this point. Starting pitching has a looong way to go.

To me he sure looks more smooth fielding the ball and a natural SS than Smith does not taking anything away from Smith.

If Slaughter can't lock down third I might keep Hughes at SS and move Smith back to third.
