Will never understand why he left.
Didn't like the shady side of college athletics, and had a famous falling out with the higher powers running LSU Athletics at that time.

Arnsparger had some interesting wins and interesting losses, and he never could win a bowl game. We did benefit from his being with us, but picking Mike Archer was a major bust, and when we didn't think it could get any worse, it did in the form of Curley Hallman. From what I recall, Brodhead had problems with him demanding that Dale Brown be fired for his outspokeness, claiming that it adversely impacted football recruiting. Truth of the matter, Arnsparger was not exactly "Mr. Congeniality", which did not halp things at all in terms of recruiting. All that said, Arnsparger was a good quick fix, but he was never meant to be long term.

Like with many of the hires at LSU..

From those numbers, it looks more like Archer's fault, rather than the fault of Arnsparger.
freakin' this a 1000x over.
Archer is by far at the top of the list when it comes to LSU coaches who left the cupboard bare.
All you have to do is look at the NFL talent Arnsparger's staff brought in that led those '87 and '88 teams.
Heck, Archer brought us below SWAC level on talent. When you have Gary Pegues and Jamie Bice and Tommy Fabacher in your starting secondary, you are a horrendous recruiter.

LSU went 5 straight years never losing more than 1 SEC game, but the truth is that the 80's represented a renegade decade ruled by independents (Notre Dame, FSU, Miami, SMU, BYU, WVU, Penn State, Syracuse, etc.).
There was nothing LSU could do to win a NC in that era without blatant recruiting violations, and that's just not our tradition. (And you can talk all you want about LSU not being totally innocent and pure when it comes to athletics, but the truth is that we have a cleaner history than any other SEC football program besides Vanderbilt.)
Arnsparger (A) hated the recruiting side of football (which I sort of sympathize with), and (B) liked Florida and the San Diego Chargers more than he liked LSU. He did not bleed P&G, but was just a temporary mercenary hire. There's nothing wrong with that, per se. It helped make the LSU football program more professional. But it also could never have resulted in national titles.
Just my two cents

Ridiculous. He left Archer a top 15 program and Archer ruined it.

The best shot we had in the 1980s was the 1982 team that lost to Nebraska 21-20 in the Orange Bowl. The other losses that year were winnable games against Mississippi State and Tulane. I am pretty sure we beat both Florida and Alabama on the road that year.

Doubtful, it was a different world back then, pre-BCS. Even if we go undefeated in 87, we would have been behind Miami and OU, so #2 at best, that was the only shot. And he was 0-3 in bowls, so its not a given we would have beaten Syracuse in the Sugar.
The talent was already dropping off with him too. 89 was the first losing season, the Jr and Sr on that team were his recruits.
ETA: This would be a great time from some admin to release the epic 85 Liberty Bowl thread

Arnsparger got recruits on his name the first year or 2, but the talent was sliding already when he left. Archer royally screwed things up, but the program was headed downhill already

the 87 team was 10-1-1, that was our best shot and best team between 1969 and 2003.
We didn't play UGA in 82 they went undefeated, we also tied UT. I guess if we were undefeated and beat NU in the Orange bowl, we would have won it aftr Penn St beat UGA

How close did Arnsparger have us to a NC??
not close at all IMO. Yes good years but what has been said already, 80's were a different monster, "leagues" really weren't winning titles then, more independents

My point here was that the 1982 team was stronger even though there record was not as good as the 1987 team. Before losing to Mississippi State, LSU was in line to play Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Penn State got the Sugar bid after the LSU loss to Miss State.
The Nebraska team we lost to by a point only lost 1 game that year, to Penn State in a game that is still notorious for the officiating. Nebraska did not lose again until the next year's Orange Bowl, where many regarded them as the best team ever until they were upset by Miami.

Ill say this, if Bob Broadhead had been here at the time Arsparger bolted, LSU would never have had to deal with Archer, Hallman, and DiNardo as head coaches. As bad as some of these guys were, none of them were as bad for LSU as Joe Dean.
