re: Houston Chronicle: Texas and Oklahoma reach out to SEC about joining conference

If you want to see what it’s like with the horns, just look at the “horns down” penalty that they forced the Big 12 to adopt.
That one thing, and very recent, is all you need to know about UT and their leadership.
But in the net... there's no way the SEC passes that money, brand, and weight in leverage for the next TV contract. Because that's what is going to really matter.
When there's 12 playoff teams and the majority of the ratings for the majority of those teams are in the SEC and Sankey's replacement is negotiating with ESPN, whispering "remember CBS... look at those numbers", having UTx (and OU) "brand" in that quiver is going to matter.
But yeah, the Longhorns are football's version of Golgotha the shite demon... they turn everything, including gold into smelly, runny, shite just by touching it. They could ruin a 3-way with Beckinsale and Halle Berry. They could make Beethoven sound like a 2 year old banging on a Hasbro xylophone.
Therein lies the quandary for the SEC... to reign their touch of death in their brand will have to be diminished. Our schools will have to do our part by beating them often... and if you can, brutually. We'll have to make them the Baylor of old in the SEC (will be nice). Other than that, the realistic perception that they are middle of the road in this conference will have to be pushed.
And "horns down" won't be prohibited... it will have to be encouraged.

Agree. It would be LSU, Ole Miss, State, Ar-Kansas, A&M, Mizzou, Texas, and OU in the SEC West? It would be like LSU joined the Big12. Nope.
Fuk Tejas.

Love adding OU. Texas, not so much. I’d rather have UNC as #16.

Bama/Auburn to the east and get rid of cross division permanent opponents plus and an extra SEC game would be epic
The pod set up is frickin gay

Include Baylor and Okie State in the West, Clemson and FSU in the East. Two 10 team divisions. Play everybody in your division and three rotating cross division opponents. No OOC games. Done

Yea but they’re not walking into the SEC and swinging a dick around with the bamas, LSUs, UGAs and Floridas around. They can get away with that in the big 12

In both the SWC and the Big 12, Texas has propped up smaller schools in exchange for conference terms that reflect the value each team brings individually.
Fair

They would not need nor ask for a similar arrangement in the SEC bc the conference pulls its own weight
They wouldn’t need to, but Texas thinks they are Gods gift to football and they are arrogant enough to make demands the SEC shouldn’t and wouldn’t accept

Without reading the article, my initial reaction is that this is a negotiating tactic to use against other members of the B12. Texas and Oklahoma run the conference; the only reason they'd consider leaving is if the other members start to get too uppity and Oklahoma and TX lose their influence and power. They'll use the threat of leaving against other members for some sort of concessions in future dealmaking.

The SEC has already destroyed the cache of UT and OU. Just take FSU and Clemson. The SEC would still be, by far, the most premier and lucrative league. Texas and OU would just join the PAC12 and falll furthet behind.

Let’s those chodes in. We could always use another couple vandy types in the sec.

This is some leverage play

Clemson brings nothing in terms of tv money and FSU is in decline and adds little to UF tv draw.
Take UNC for Charlotte market and E. Coast.
Then take either OU ( north Texas market and consistently good football) or W. Va or Va. Tech.
Texas is poison and has been a bad partner in every conference they play in. They bring little additional value after A & M and OU.

Take OU and tell Texas yes and boot little bro A&M

UNC will never leave their tobacco road cronies. They are always going to be a bball school, by choice. The SEC doesn't necessarily need more markets and Oklahoma doesn't bring much either. People tune in because it is the best.

Yes it is. Missouri is not

Any guesses who would be LSU's permanent foe from the east. My bet is Alabama.
