Miles is such an enigma. He is a likeable guy who recruits well, appears to run a relatively clean program (although that may now be up for debate) and wins games in the SEC.
On the flipside of that, LSU seems to always play down to competition, seems to be very undisciplined to be an upper-level program and is, at times, frustrating as hell to watch (case in point, UNC, UTenn and McNeese last year).
He has been that way for years now, most every season filled with big wins and curious, head-scratchers.

Damn- that's too bad. I sure hope nobody has a problem with winning.

Don't you just hate getting stuck with someone that has averaged 10 wins a year for six years while everybody around here knows that any other coach in America would have won 6 MNC's during that time?
I think we could do better, for this kind of money, than a coach who averages 3 losses a year and only wins the SEC 17% of the time despite having top 2 talent (in the SEC) every year.
See how easy it is to turn that around?

I have a hard time believing any coach short of Belichick is worth a $19m buyout. That number is absurb on so many levels.

What is Saban's or Brown's?

Yeah!
So you're suggesting we switch to the Big 12?

There will always be ignorant band-wagoners that call for him to be fired the instant he loses a game or comes close to losing...

I am sure that LSU could save a bunch of money by getting Hallman back. Or Dinardo. I understand they came pretty cheap.

He is not going anywhere for a long, long time...win or lose.
That's pretty damn scary.

I am not sure about either, but if memory serves (and assuming nothing has been changed), Saban doesn't have a buyout...meaning that could fire him and not pay him, and meaning he is free to leave without his new job having to pay Bama.

Or makes 3 game management blunders(Ole Miss, Tenn, Ark) in 2 years, none of which a middle school coach would make.

From a business perspective, most good business men do not like having all of their eggs in one basket, no matter how good things seem at the time. This is how some businesses continue to exist in bad economic times, while others fail.
Hypothetically speaking, say LSU suffers a year akin to 1998 (pre-season top 10 only to finish 4-7). Say the following year, like 1999, the team wins 3 games (NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING THIS WILL OR COULD HAPPEN). Miles buyout will still be in the area of $12 million. Despite what has been said in this thread, TAF was not in a position to buy Miles out before the Bama game.
Even if LSU could afford to buy Miles out at $12 million in two years, why put yourself in that position? Was it necessary? Is it a smart business move...to wed yourself to ANY coach in such a fashion?
This is not a bash Miles thread. It is a thread about the business decision to lock yourself up financially in a bad economy to a coach.

I'm suggesting that Miles's record here is good, but it's not $18M buyout good. Even if he had won 2 or 3 SEC Championships, I wouldn't think that kind of buyout is a good idea. Pay him loads of money every year if you want, but don't take away your flexibility like that.
No coach is good enough that he should be able to bend the university over like that.

Success is awesome. What sucks is undisciplined chaos and wasted potential.
