re: Hodson article got me thinking. Who is the best all-time LSU QB?

quote:This is just hilarious, considering JaMarcus had a better TD:INT ratio for his CAREER than any of Flynn, Hodson or Jones had for even a single season. Bert Jones never completed 56% of his passes in any season of his career. Russell completed over 61% of his passes over his entire career. JaMarcus' highest INT% for a season was 2.9%. Jones' lowest was 3.4%. Hodson's lowest was 3.0%.
you just did not know WHICH barn.
The readiness for this board to completely ignore reality to trash a former tiger just because they think he's "embarrassed" them or because he turns out to be an NFL bust is really shameful. The fact that any LSU fan would make comments even suggesting that JaMarcus had issues at LSU with precision and accuracy is laughable. He may well have been the most accurate quarterback LSU ever had. And precise, and best decision making (on the field, that is) and (of course) strongest armed. It's sad that people have to convince themselves now that he wasn't as good as he really was.
And this is from the guy who still likes Hodson and Tyler and Rohan and both Matts and others better than JaMarcus. This has ZERO to do with who you like or how much; I'm just talking about who was the best (like the OP says). And Russell was very arguably the best. I can't competently rate him on personal experience against Jones or Tittle or Rabb because i didn't see those guys play. But everything recorded suggests that as great as those guys were, they did not have the tools and execution that JaMarcus did on the field. And I know I've never seen anyone with his level of tools and execution since I started watching in the Woodley/Emsminger days.

Hey I was just joking about Hill....Obviously

This is one of your better posts, Joey.

5 pages of "best QB talk", and not one sarcastic a-hole mentioned JJ. This board is slipping...

I would think the best qb's would have to have a ring just like they measure NFL qb's, so in my life time it would be m mauck and m flynn
that's a poor standard and its not exactly how they measure pro QB's. No one thinks Jim Plunkett is better than Dan Marino.

Outside of Melvin Hill, I don't think there's a QB that's been mentioned in this thread so far that we would not have won the National Championship with last year in place of JJ (and yes, I am including Marcus Randall; I always thought he was a bit -- a little bit -- underrated).
Interesting question, I think pinning all the blame on JJ both ignores the terrible showing by the OL and doesn't give any credit to a great defense at Alabama.
I do think guys like Russell, Hodson and maybe Davey could have ve opened up the d more helping the run.
Flynn was terrible against Bama in 2007. Their 2011 D was much, much better.
Tyler would not have fared much better than JJ, he wasn't a good passer either. People just like him and he won after years of losing.
Mauck was bad against OU who's D was good, but not as good as Alabama.
Marcus Randall?
no chance. Posted on 7/23/12 at 4:28 pm to King Joey

not only was he accurate, his last year his ypa avg was over 9. That's accurate, deep.

Mauck struggled against the decent teams. Not just OU.

i dont get how russell keeps coming up. i remember his carelessness losing more games than his pure talent won us. he was extremely good but give me flynn or rohan for four years and id be fine. the georgia sec championship sticks out. he threw like 4 picks and it was over before the half. of course the next game he lit up notre dame. the real qb travesty imo was not jj or jl but how davey was not given more time. he would hold all the records

Mettenberger is already is the greatest....

It was indeed a travesty that Rohan didn't play more.
Russell comes up bc he's recent, he was top draft pick, he was physically awesome. Best arm I've ever seen probably including nfl guys. But it's the intangibles. With all his talent and the talent around him, shouldnt lsu have won a NC? Was it his lack of leadership? I don't know. I wasn't in the huddle or at practice. And really the same could apply to Peyton at Tenn.

Probably the worst thing that happened to Rohan was Booty showing back up at LSU. Not sure if Ro had the work ethic or just didn't excel in practice, that was a knock on him at New England as well. 2001 was fantastic though.
As far as careers at LSU, it's hard to argue with Hodson. Russell and Rohan struggled early in their careers while Hodson was All-SEC 1st team 4 times.

That is the lazy man's, hindsight, recliner analysis.
A less mobile QB would have made things worse.
JJ connected on 65% of mostly what the D gave.
Of course there were a few missed deeper opportunities, but that even happens on Sundays.
You would really have to study the coverage to say if he should have thrown to some deep routes. Some routes you just don't throw vs MOFO and others not vs MOFC.

YA had the best transition to the NFL. But Jones is the best LSU qb.

It's a myth that Flynn was a great qb at LSU he was avg AT BESt. Hell JJ IN 09 ha a higher qb rating than Flynn in 07. Anyone saying Flynn is even in the discussion for ALLTIME BEST QB AT LSU, just doesn't understand football.
