Bert Jones gets my vote for what he did at LSU and in the NFL. As others have said, his numbers at LSU aren't reflective of his ability because half of the time he was on the bench. Imagine what he could have done if playing full time.

I wouldn't know who's the best of all time because I haven't see them all, but in my time of watching LSU football, which is probably the last 26 years or so, my order would have to be,

1 Tommy Hodson
2 Rohan Davey
3 Jamarcus Russell

Toss up between Flynn, Mauck.

I always thought Flynn was far better than Mauck. The offense would sometimes scare me when Mauck was QB. With Flynn the offense won games.

He made first team all SEC QB all four years he was at LSU. Only player in LSU history to do so. Also, first SEC QB to surpass 8000 yards and 60 TDs. I'd say that makes him about as good as everyone remembers he was.

Bert Jones - no contest

It's tough to follow a legend and Jones was drafted in the first round to replace Johnny Unitas in Baltimore. A rookie replacing Johnny U, or as the play by play man (crazy Artie Donovan) called him "that kid."

Three years later that kid was all pro and the most popular Colt. That's how good he was. But I'll let Bill Belichick say it.

"I have had the fortunate experience to work with some outstanding quarterbacks. Certainly Phil Simms in New York was a tremendous quarterback for our football team. Tom Brady has been the same here. Vinny [Testaverde] did a great job for us at Cleveland and at the Jets and even in his role here at the Patriots. As a pure passer I don't think I could put anybody ahead of Bert Jones. I know he had a short career and the shoulder injury, but when I was there and he was just starting his career, the success that he had and his ability to throw the ball as a pure passer and as an athlete, it would be hard to put anybody ahead of Bert Jones at that point in time."

------
This was in '07 though - before he got to see Jamarcus play at Oakland.

Personally I have:
Jones

then in any order

Davey
Hodson
Russell
Miley

Mentions: Risher, Tyler, Flynn, Mauck

I saw those at LSU but didn't get to see Tittle in college. He was great in the pros.

Also for a good thread:
Name the QB tandems for LSU starting with Rabb and Fields and ending with Jefferson and Lee. There were many.

I would have to say

1-Hodson; Most successfull career, including 2 SEC titles.
2-Mauck; LSU's first NC in 50 years
3-Flynn; NC, albeit with 2 losses.
4-Jones; I believe he had the most potential of ANY LSU QB, but was restrained by the times and the system. Proclaimed to have the most talent by pro talent annalyst.
5-Y.A.; What can you say, most successful overall career.
6-Tyler; My personnal favorite....Leadership, guts and talent. Loved to watch him play.
7-Russel; '05 and '06 may have been the best LSU teams ever assembled.

Watched a dvd from my collection of the 1971 LSU vs Notre Dame game. At least from the time I have followed the team (since 1967), I'd have to give it to Bert Jones. Jones also had a decent line. It was incredible how much time they gave him to pass when he was out there. However, trying to use a drop back passer to run the option was a waste. Looking back, he was right that Mac did not use him properly. If Mac had tailored the offense to Jones' talents, LSU's record that year would have been better.

Jeff Wickersham?

Honestly, it has to be Jones....but Billy Ezell, Pat Screen were very good qbs back in the 1960s.

+1

Jamarcus had a great arm and could throw and hit any barn 65 yds down the field, you just did not know WHICH barn.

My lifetime - Hodson. Best ever - Bert Jones, and I don't think it's even close.

LSU went 4-7 in Hodson's senior year, despite his having great numbers. He still made All-Conference and set records in 1989.

I would think the best qb's would have to have a ring just like they measure NFL qb's
Really? So you think the NFL considers Trent Dilfer a better QB than Dan Marino? I'd have to disagree.

I don't recall anybody making much of a fuss when Drew Brees surpassed Dilfer's mark for passing yards in a season . . . and I'd be kind of surprised to see Trent go in as a first-ballot HoF'er.

I think he was referring more to Hodson's legacy being marred by the 4-7 record his senior season after the 8-4 SEC Championship season his junior year, as opposed to Hodson specific statistical performance.

I'm certain we win the championship with Herb Tyler last year.
Outside of Melvin Hill, I don't think there's a QB that's been mentioned in this thread so far that we would not have won the National Championship with last year in place of JJ (and yes, I am including Marcus Randall; I always thought he was a bit -- a little bit -- underrated).

I remember Hodson but I still feel he is overated because we went so long of a span without a decent QB. People just love him so their perception is off.
I'd take Russell over Hodson, too, but I disagree with your assessment here. Hodson was all that and a bag of chips. He was an absolutely phenomenal QB (held almost every SEC passing record until Spurrier's QBs started dominating in the mid-'90s), and one of the best two or three passers we've ever had, and probably in the top 1% or 2% of all time (that' still several dozen QBs, so nobody freak that I'm calling him better than [insert all-time great here]). His delivery, accuracy and reads were nearly impeccable, and his touch was a thing of beauty. He had good talent around him but nowhere near the relative level we have now, and he was still awesome. The way he hit open receivers in perfect stride so consistently was nearly Weurffel-esque. Hodson really was a great QB.

Hodson and Tyler (because I was there to see them) were my favorites all time, closely followed by Rohan. But I still think JaMarcus is the best QB to ever put on a Tiger uniform (no matter how lazy he got in the NFL).
