I remember a stretch where LSU would get knocked off by the eventual national champion 3-4 times. Indiana for sure in 81, and Louisville in 86, then Indiana again in the Elite 8 in 87 I think.

Possible. I'm 56. However, anyone that was alive during the 80's and watched the 81 and 86 team would agree those teams were much more talented than this team.

The ‘86 team played hard, very scrappy team, but outside of Nikita Wilson they weren’t super talented.

Winning teams and people focus on what you can do because can’t in sports at this level usually doesn’t exist. This idiot’s entire outlook is based on “can’t” which means it’s based on nothing. He says we’re soft inside yet nobody can score inside against us and we just outplayed the top rebounding team in the country. He says we can’t shoot while ignoring that plenty of worse shooting teams have made the final 4 including one of our own at LSU.

This team has a chemistry that has been lacking in recent years. They are young, but they play like a team instead of a bunch of prima donnas only worried about their own stats. They seem to click together and seem tight knit. This makes me particularly optimistic.

All I said was this team is nowhere near as talented as 81 or 86

'86 team is probably my favorite of all time. Great childhood memories of their crazy season and magical tournament run. But that team had unbelievable chemistry and senior leadership under Redden and Taylor, not unbelievable talent, besides Hot Plate Williams.

Yes, there was a long run where every time LSU made the Sweet 16 or better they lost to the eventual champion.

1953- Lost to Indiana in Final 4.
1979- Lost to Michigan St in Sweet 16.
1980- Lost to Louisville in Elite 8.
1981- Lost to Indiana in Final 4.
1986- Lost to Louisville in the Final 4.
1987- Lost to Indiana in the Elite 8.

Got some of them. 79 lost to Magic and MSU. 80 lost to Louisville. 81, 86 and 87 you mentioned. 5 in 9 years.

I loved the 86 team. The 87 team was a ton of fun as well. Absolutely robbed in the loss to Indiana in the Elite 8.

06, that team made a total of 4 threes per game with its top shooters being

Darrell Mitchell- 2.3 per game at 39%
Taz Mitchell - 0.8 at 29%
Garrett Temple- 0.8 at 24%
Big Baby was next in makes with 6 total at 26%

This years team has 5 guys with more makes than Davis already and 2 guys above 40% from three

Wilkinson- 0.6 makes at 45%
Days- 2.5 makes at 35%
Murray- 1.1 makes at 34%
Pinson- 1.3 makes at 33%
Eason- 0.6 makes at 27%

Reid has 4 makes at 44%, he will surpass Baby’s season totals and Gaines already has 3 more makes than Davis though his % is low.

I figured it was 06 you were talking about. That team definitely wasn’t a strong shooting team. Reminds me a little of this team. I will say if you looked at overall threes made across the country you’ll find the three pointer is so much more a part of the game now than even back in 2006. To me we have enough shooters to be OK this year if we take good threes. Right now we take too many late in the clock because the ball sticks and our ball movement is poor. If we can just improve on that a little, it should be enough with our defense to make a deep run.

We all know college basketball is lot what it used to be. We got Shaq for 3 years. No way we get him that long now.

That really has nothing to do with the original statement. This team has a great chance to make a big run in March.

Shot selection is improving the last couple games since Wade mentioned he was gonna stress it to the guys and our % is going up. We’ve gone from 29% after Auburn to 32% in just 2 games hitting 41.4% against 2 very good defenses. We have capable shooters, (Days, Pinson, Murray) and Wilkinson is becoming a reliable spot up shooter as well. That 06 team had Mitchell and that’s it.

I thought our off ball movement was horrible in the first half yesterday against Tennessee. Pretty much everything we got in the half court was off of Pinson’s penetration. We were much better in the second half. Really concerned about the next few games with Pinson likely being out.

A lot of times when the ball gets stuck it’s due to Pinson’s timing off the pick and roll action and inability to see openings. Against Tennessee he was much better at finding people. Gaines problems are more with his ball handling and physical strength, he’s usually much better than Pinson when it comes to finding open guys once he can get to the middle of the d. If Pinson is out he’s gonna have to grow up fast but it could be good for us in the long term.

Louisville in 1980 as well.

Eta: playing the “what if” game. If Rudy doesn’t get hurt we win it all in 81. If Nikita doesn’t flunk we win it all in 86.

If the team plays like they played last night, they are capable of making the Final Four.

I do agree in the long run this likely will help us. It will force Gaines to be in a more important role which should help his growth. Other guys will need to step up as well, especially Justice Williams. It should improve our quality depth in the long run.
