If BP is such a good coordinator, why couldn’t we stick with the 3-4 until we get the proper personnel to run the 4-3.
A good coach should adjust to what you have before scrapping and starting over!
said this from day one... pelini should run the 3/4 till next spring...

Poor tackling, blown coverages, can’t set the edge, getting pushed off the ball, there are a lot of things going wrong. They really just look undisciplined and unmotivated. They looked really good to start the game. They were firing off the ball, playing downhill and meeting ball carriers at the LOS when they were trying to take the edge. Then the offense gave up some points then it all just fricking collapsed. They folded when it was time to dig in. You can blame scheme to a point, but what I was a lack leadership and no fire.

I don’t know if any specific teams that switched and what type of success they had. I can tell you that I don’t remember LSU ever being a 3-4 before Aranda. I could be wrong though.
I will say it’s probably easier, from a personnel standpoint, to switch from 4-3 to 3-4 than the other way around. Going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 you can bring in a 4 LB or bring down a bigger safety to the box. Going from 3-4 to 4-3 is a different story. It’s tough to plug in 3-4 lineman into a 4-3 scheme because they’re physically built different, traditionally.

Tepper ran a 3-4. we actually switched from the 4-3 (really 4-2-5) we'd run all year in 97 to his 3-4 for the Indy Bowl vs ND.
and I feel like some of those teams in the late 80s when I kinda started watching were 3-4 types too. I was pretty young back then though, could be wrong.

What's the point?
Uh, that the "transition" year wasn't a problem. Why don't you follow the conversation I was having before posting? Our defensive rankings for years 2-4 are irrelevant to people acting like our defense struggled in Aranda's first year.
Also, I'd wager we'd be 4-1 today if our defense was ranked 32nd. My how times have changed.

Knowing that, wouldn’t it seem moving to more defensive linemen in a 4-3 system vs a 3-4 system be the OPPOSITE of what you should be doing based on how the game has changed? Seems like everyone should be converting to more LBs and more guys in coverage over more D-lineman, generally speaking?
In other words, you’re obviously going to be playing more nickel and dime defenses nowadays than 8-men in the box defensive fronts...seems like a 3-4 is much more easily adaptable to those nickel/dime coverages than a 4-3 ?
the differences are overblown
your "nickel" argument is also wrong. we ran a lot of that with Aranda, too, and it's very similar to our lineup now
you're typically going to have 4 guys "down" with 2 edge and 2 interior, with 2-3 LBs behind them
i think a 4-3 also is easier to transition to nickel b/c you can run the same 4 guys out consistently. why i was happy to see the switch
it's not about 3-4 v 4-3. it's about Aranda v. Pelini, primarily LB coaching and coverages/communication

my point was just that the 4-3 itself vs modern offenses isn’t the issue as the OP was asking.
Saban ran a 4-3 until he transitioned to a 3-4 after he arrived at Alabama.

We actually wanted to move that direction in 2015.
Steele and Dave both sorta eased into it.
We never had a real NT till Alexander really.
