Historians: Did people vehemently defend Curley Hallman while he was the head coach here?

I was a kid when he was at LSU, and was too young to remember the dynamics of his tenure. I could imagine that the only thing more ridiculous than these Orgeron apologists would be people who defended Hallman. Did these people exist? How about for Dinardo when things started to go south for him? Did people make ridiculous excuses for him as well?
I'll hang up and listen.

How could you even know beyond a few sports writers and people you had daily contact with what they thought?
Social media has changed the game. You have instant access to 100s of peoples opinions.

Hallman was a very successful coach at Southern Miss-he took over for Mike Archer-who left a very bare cupboard. Hallman did a decent job of recruiting but never could get a winning season. He's probably best known for the "pick six game' at Auburn "The beginning of the end for Hallman came on September 17, 1994 at Jordan–Hare Stadium against Auburn. LSU led 23–9 early in the fourth quarter, and the Bayou Bengals were in good position to end Auburn's 13-game winning streak. But LSU quarterback Jamie Howard threw two interceptions that were returned for Auburn touchdowns, tying the game. LSU regained the lead with a field goal, but when the Bayou Bengals were trying to run out the clock, Howard threw his fourth interception of the game, and incredibly, Auburn returned the pick for another touchdown, giving the home team a 30–26 lead. LSU drove into Auburn territory in the game's final minute, but Howard threw his fifth and sixth interceptions on consecutive drives, sealing the win for Auburn.(Wikipedia). His most notable win came at Alabama the year before when the Tigers who were a 3 TD underdog stunned the college football world by upsetting the Tide ending their 31 game winning streak. Many wanted him gone and some realized he was improving the talent but his coaching ability was suspect. The following year-Gerry Dinardo took over and mostly with Hallman's recruits went 7-4-1 and beat Michigan State, coached by Nick Saban, in the Independence Bowl 45-26. So yes, Hallman did a decent job of recruiting!

The difference is the media outlets. Fans had no voice. Average joe can be heard today by many. The all you could do is wrtie a letter or call the ADs office.
This isn’t an apples to apples comparison.

You are right in a way. No social media but you did have call ins to radio shows and letters to the editor of The Advocate. It was just done a bit differently.

IIRC, Hallman's success at Southern Miss was due to a young quarterback named Brett Favre.

Hell, back in those days you couldn't even get more than a paragraph on LSU football in the Monroe News Star......... Who knows.

No social media. We also weren't a consistent top 10 program when we hired him. The last NC at that time was 1959 when only white people could play. It was a different dynamic when Curly was hired.
Curly didn't work out but he was at least qualified enough to get hired. Orgeron was not qualified for any HC job in the country when we hired him. Complete bafoonery.
The only main gripes I remember hearing was how he somehow lost all the major in state recruits. Dinardo deserves some credit by coming in and putting the fence back up with Kevin Faulk.

That may be true...but he still had to coach the team with Farve at QB...and he sure as hec didn't have a Farve at LSU!

I was at LSU at the time and people would buy the bumper stickers that said “Crazy bout Curley” and cut them and apply them to their cars to read “Curley bout Crazy”. Old school social media.

No one was defending Hallman based on his record and the fact that he was banging co-eds as he was walking out the door.

Lol...kids don't remember. Only had newspaper and you talk with your friends

As Hallman stated in an interview about his days at LSU he said "When I first got there, there were signs everywhere with "Crazy bout Curley" on them. The next year, the signs read " Curley bout crazy"....He did have some sense of humor about it,

No sports talk radio either. That didn't happen until mid 90's

Yes, the same small but vocal bunch (Or their relatives) of rabid LSU Pumpnut MA's were defending Curley on the radio talk-shows.
I was on the Northshore-Mandeville so I listened to Hap Glaudi and Buddy Diliberto on WWL.
There will always be that group of nut burgers that defend anything LSU, no matter how bad it gets.

There was no TR or social media then. If there had been, it would have been epic.
