Re: the VT game, I remember Herbie talking to BM in hushed tones as LSU proceeded to annihilate VT. I think Herbie and BM were genuinely in awe of what they were witnessing and didn't know how to handle it. They assured themselves SC was still #1, but I think their faith was shaken at that point.

My memory is that Va Tech was devalued more than what was really happening, which was an awesome display against a quality team. It took the whole season for Va Tech to prove their real worth. It left the voters no choice but to put us in the game with Ohio St.

The opposite effect happened when USC beat Nebraska. USC got big credit for the win against an average team.

I don't know about average. USC's win sure didn't look nearly as impressive after the Jayhawks lit Nebraska up for more points than what they scored in the entire decade of the 90;s in one game. In other words...Nebraska's D is putrid. Bo has a lot of work to do.

USC's games against Nebraska & Notre Dame were touted as huge OOC games.....then we saw Notre Dame loose to Navy, Nebraska get lit up like a Christmas tree by Colorado, Mizzou, Kansas, etc. Tough OOC games my arse.

Herbie used to be a nausiating bucknut. I mean unabashidly promoting OSU and the B10 to the point it was impossible to watch him. He started his turn in Jan....'07, and entered the homestretch in Jan '08. I can listen to him, now.

I expect some favoritism toward your alma mater. But guys like Lou Holtsh take it to another level. Notre Dame could play the New England Patriots and he'll pick the Irish. Tim Brown was pretty bad during the Sugar Bowl too. "You can even say Notre Dame is dominating LSU in this game". Everybody on the set laughed at him...

Herbie annoyed me with his "OSU has a big chip on their shoulder" shite before the NC Game. Like LSU didn't have a chip on their shoulders...

ESPN & ABC are all the same entity, the same owners, & ABC carries the Rosebowl. So as noted here, the talking heads promote who they are told to promote: the Pac 10 & the Big Ten. One of the main talking heads supposedly pitched a fit during the off season last yr bout it & had his hand spanked.

Musberger, John Saunders, Dan Fouts, Mike Gottfried, GameDay crew, Snoop Dogg, Carson Palmer and Will Ferril, and just about everyone @ESPN.

How's that?

He only says that cause he has to. Who in their right mind would say the SEC is overrated? After we just kicked the shite out everybodys most badass all-american team of all time in Ohio State two years in a row. Weird how Kentucky and Arkansas can beat LSU, much less play with them, but Ohio State shouldnt have even been on the same field.... cant really deny the fact

The dominating Florida win over Ohio State was one of those weird things that happens. Those things happen. Kind of like when a 1995-1996 Florida team beat everybody else in the SEC by double digits but got completely whacked by Nebraska.

LSU's win over Ohio State was impressive, but it was basically a "the team that makes the fewest mistakes wins" game. Ohio State pretty much moved the ball as well as LSU did, though it's true that LSU's defensive front made more negative plays. Plus, that was a "next year" Ohio State team that was not, going into the season, supposed to win the Big 10. It was a very young team.

What's weird is that Ohio State dominates Michigan, Michigan dominates in head to head vs. the SEC, but Ohio State can't seem to beat SEC teams in bowl games.

Football can be strange like that. Ohio State has, during the Tressel era, produced more NFL caliber athletes than anybody in the SEC, and it's not even really close. But they can't beat SEC teams in bowl games.

don't feel bad.

there is a guy on here who goes by "inebr8ted tiger" and it was realized one day that most of us had been reading it as a form of "inbred tiger", which is probably redundant according to some.

And that is perfect for this thread because they would not be the #1 program if they were in the SEC.

Typical myopic redneck response. USC would be the #1 program in any conference. Just like Miami would have been in the early part of the decade, or Nebraksa in the 90's.

Typical Hollywood snobbery. USC doesn't have the #1 program NOW in the PAC10!

Based on what criteria exactly? No. of BCS championships? Top 5, clearly. But head and shoulders above Florida, LSU, OSU, Texas? No. Better this year than Georgia or Florida? No.

When I say #1 program, that does not necessarily mean #1 team every year.

Let's say you would given a large sum of money if you could correctly guess a team that will finish in the top 5 of the AP or coaches poll in say 2011. You could only pick one team, who would you pick?

I am sure the vast majority of people would select USC.

OU, LSU, OSU all have more wins than USC this decade....so these 3 teams could be picked too...along with Florida. Vast majority of people on the West Coast or at ESPN?

Let me clarify...it's debatable that USC has the #1 nat'l program now as they play in the PAC10. They clearly have the #1 program on the entire West Coast. USC is phenominal. But not head and shoulders above everyone else. If they were, they'd go undefeated every year. They can't even go through the PAC10 undefeated. If u think USC would have as many wins this decade while playing in the SEC, then that's a testament to your football knowledge, as all reasonable and unbiased football fans, publications, and pundits concede that the SEC is tougher than the PAC10 right now. I say the SEC is the best right now, but not by much. CFB is much more competitive than it used to be 10 years ago. The powerhouses can't stack up like they used to. The days of a coach like Bear Bryant visiting a highschool for a monster prospect and having him in his back pocket by lunch time are over. Kids today want playing time more than anything. $$$$.
