Then why did the former head of B1G officiating say that it was clearly a catch?

One is that you have to survive the ground, but the other is that the ball was caught outside the endzone and a foot was inbounds prior to passing the goal line, which meant he didn’t have to survive the ground.

It would have still been a catch on the 50.

The ball can touch the ground in the process of a catch, you just can’t “use the ground” to make the catch if you haven’t possessed the ball.

Call on the field was a catch — Thoroughly bullshite.

Once he made a football move the survive threw the ground rule isnt in lay. If a WR catches the ball at the 2O takes 3 stes and the ball moves when you hit the ground thats 1Oo% a catch

The catch is not made per the rule if he doesn’t maintain control through the ground

What is a football move? How many steps are required after the ball touches his hands..
Does your Rule Book explain how the ground can cause a fumble?

What if Clemson had the ball and this was the last play of the game and the score was tied?

I read your post. Idgaf what you’re saying.

I’m asking you if you think he caught the ball inbounds?

The ball broke the plane at the pylon.

Brown was outside the field of play when he hit the ground.

Being right? Not really.

The rule is stupid. I can’t help that none of you understand it.

It was the right call. It wasn’t a catch. Per the rule.

The NCAA rulebook (Rule 2-4-3, 4-2-4, 8-2-1) requires the player to have possession of the ball when it crosses the goal line.
• Once the ball breaks the plane of the goal line in possession, the play is dead immediately — touchdown.
• There is no requirement to maintain control all the way to the ground if possession was established before the ball broke the plane.

He was wrong.

I imagine he will retract that

All I know is that it seemed like there was a huge shift in reffing that was suddenly in LSUs favor. I think that head ref knew they'd collasally fricked up and it affected them the rest of the game.

But here is why I think they screwed it up. You can see his hands on the laces of the ball as he crashes down and the ball never was released from his grip even though it did touch the ground. They got it wrong

Yep, you are right, and virtually everyone, including other refs, is wrong. Sure Jan.

No one argues that the rule isn't stupid. That is irrelevant here because "the rule" was misapplied. He had the ball running upright (he had taken at least one step) when the ball crossed the goal line/knee hit the pylon with the ball in front of him. But the main irrelevancy is he WAS a ball carrier/runner. He was NOT in the act of catching the pass...he already had possession and was moving with the ball. Anyone who can't understand that he was a runner/making a football move doesn't understand what occurred on the play.

It never should have been ruled incomplete. The call on the field should have stood

The pylon is irrelevant if he didn’t catch it.

He needed to either control it and then make a “football move” or else survive the ground.

He obviously didn’t survive the ground.

Did the second foot coming down out of bounds negate the football move? I don’t know. Seems a dumb interpretation. There should be a known answer to this question.

What if he would have reached for the pylon at that point, hit it and intentionally dropped it? Would it have been a TD?
