Has there been a situation where a coach was poached and it killed a program?

And a buyout could have prevented it?
I have basically only watched buyouts handicap schools for the last 10 years. Is there actually a situation where a team regretted not having a giant buyout?
Feels like we need to see this swing back where schools say, if you don't want to stay here, that's fine. We will find someone else.

This feels like bait for Ole Miss answers, so I won’t do that.
But I’m sure it’s worked out. Look at Sumrall and Tulane. Who knows if it works long term but UF has a ton of momentum and Tulane doesn’t feel like it has the same energy locally it did last year.

There are two different kinds of buyouts here.
The buyout if you fire someone, which these days is often a fully guaranteed contract at big programs.
And then a buyout if a coach leaves voluntarily for another job, which is usually far less. Lane Kiffin/LSU only owed Ole Miss $3m, for example.

You're rarely going to see huge buyouts coaches owe for leaving. They have leveraged themselves over the years and rarely will agents allow their clients to sign contracts like that, especially at a mid-major or smaller power conference program.

If you're talking about schools owing the coach a large buyout for firing him, same thing. Agents have done work over the years that it's just the price of doing business if you want a good coach. You're not going to see many coaching contracts that don't guarantee at least 80% of their remaining contract for firing someone without cause

i feel the only way to reset the market is when a coach is comfortable enough with making a poverty wage of 2 million if it means the program will fund NIL instead
Sexton will never allow one of his clients to do that

I am assuming they agree to the buyout clause for the coach leaving as they agree to the guaranteed money (and buyout for the program).
Obviously the two figures are not even close. But it's unreal what the "market" aka Sexton has dictated.

I don't know if "killed" is the right word considering they reached the CFP last year, but USC reportedly only paid Lincoln Riley $4.5M to get him from Oklahoma. OU went to the CFP each year from 2017-2019 and never lost more than 2 games in a season under Riley. Since he left, OU has had two losing seasons in 4 years and could be on their way to a 3rd this year.

Like others have pointed out, the buyouts for leaving to take another job are inconsequential and I think have trended downward. McElwain had a $7 million buyout when he left CSU, UF gave them $5 million and scheduled a game with CSU to make up the difference. It was the largest such buyout paid to a school at the time.
You could argue it did destroy that program, McElwain averaged 9 wins his two season there, since he left they have ONE season with more than 7 wins (an 8 win season in 2024 under Norvell who they fired last year). But ultimately the higher buyout still wasn’t enough of a deterrent to suitors.

LSU poached BK from ND.
That ended in tears.
Wisconsin poached Luke Fickell from Cincinnati when he had UC in the playoffs.
