One more thing : I’m older than Bert!!
You misspelled dirt.
I used to go to the Freshmen games, since at that time freshmen were ineligible for varsity play. I watched Bert warm up on the sideline and went home to tell my Dad, we’ve got us a good one. Bert threw bullets, he didn’t need the riffle. The tightest spiral I had ever seen.

I know we didn't win any championships in the Jones Era other than the 1970 SEC title, but it was a great time to be a Tiger and enjoy football in Tiger Stadium.
So true. I was fortunate enough to be able to experience what it was like to be a fan during that era. This town lived and died with LSU football. The Goodyear blimp coming to town was an event. The Tigers were gonna be on TV! People would run outside to see the blimp circling Baton Rouge.
There was little or no commercialization like there is today. Kids came to play for LSU because that's where their heart was, not because it was going fatten their wallet. The players were here for 4 years. You got to know them like a family member. Not so any more.
There were 68,500 fans in the stadium at the start of the game and at the end of the game. Parking was free and easy. Traffic was never a problem. Concessions were good and inexpensive.
Fans came to watch the game. Now they spend more time with their cell phones than they do watching the game.
I could go on but you get the point. I truly miss this time in history and am sorry for those who missed it.

I remember the Freshmen Team playing at Bernie Moore, on the artificial turf.

LSU didn't get screwed. That story has been sold as Notre Dame getting the nod over LSU. Not true at all. I spoke with the late-(QB) Mike Hillman about this, and he was still angry about the events that kept LSU at home. LSU and Charles McClendon verbally embarrassed the Cotton Bowl Committee in the locker room following an LSU home game. Field Scovall, on the Cotton Bowl Committee, was furious at what McClendon told his players about the Cotton Bowl invitation that was practically LSU's until the slight. Scovall went looking for a replacement for LSU out of anger. He found Notre Dame. LSU blew it. Notre Dame just happened to be there at the right time. Believe it. Don't believe it.

Notre Dame broke their long-standing position of not playing bowl games. Bowls had historically negotiated behind the scenes and had teams locked in. When Notre Dame announced that they were wiling to play in a bowl, the Cotton jumped on the chance to be the first to have ND.
When ND accepted the invite, the other bowls were already locked in. LSU chose to sit out rather that accept a lesser bowl invite. One of our best teams got the shaft.

Met him in his 60s and he still looked like he could probably last a couple of drives as LSUs QB
Incredible athlete

A quarterback way ahead of his time and a really great guy. Talked horses with him last fall. He’s just “solid people”.

Vs State in '71. This video doesn't show it all, but Bert took a side-step and then released it on our own 30 and Hamilton caught it on the 10 - 60 yds never looked so effortless.

1970 Cotton Bowl: Notre Dame’s 21-17 loss to No. 1 Texas
Notre Dame lifted their policy of not playing in any bowl games when at the conclusion of the 1969 season the Irish played top-ranked Texas in the Cotton Bowl.
Joe Theismann let Notre Dame on a go-ahead touchdown drive with under seven minutes to play but the Longhorns charged back as a Billy Dale touchdown dive with just over a minute to play gave Texas the win and eventual national championship.

The fact that they could be matched against the No 1 team, AND money, were the reasons that ND changed their policy. The Cotton Bowl sold LSU out for the prestige of ND.

Happy Birthday to the Ruston Rifle! I'll never forget the 1972 Ole Miss game when he hit Brad Davis to tie the game with one second left on the clock and Rusty Jackson kicking the PAT giving LSU the 17-16 victory!
