Tight end Hanner Shipley, a 280-pound 2015 signee from Texas, has left the LSU football program and transferred to Abilene Christian University, a source confirmed to The Advocate.
Shipley was ranked as the No. 46 tight end in the 2015 class and was expected to provide a big blocking body for the Tigers in the future. LSU is stacked at the tight end position for this season.
Dillon Gordon, Colin Jeter, DeSean Smith and Jacory Washington are thought to be the top four tight ends on the roster. Shipley was one of two tight ends in the 2015 signing class, joining former Jesuit High star Foster Moreau.
Shipley arrived on campus in June and practiced with the Tigers for, at least, the first week of preseason camp. He attended the team’s media day last Sunday.
Abilene Christian, a Southland Conference school, is about three hours from Shipley’s hometown of Marble Falls, Texas. Shipley posted on his Facebook page that he’s now an Abilene Christian student and is living in Abilene, Texas.

How do early signees work? Can they back fill these spots since 25 is the annual cap?
Could this help us for all these studs we are recruiting?

This is crazy, as I recall he was a very early commitment, kept that pledge all the way through, and he only lasts couple weeks and leaves? Did he enroll in spring as well?

Won't need him when we're going towards more spread.

Guess he didn't want to sit on the bench for two seasons before possibly getting playing time

He had future tackle written all over him

I would also like to know the answer to this--could this possibly mean LSU could sign two extra players, or as many as 27, for the 2016 class, since Shipley & Cutrer were apparently both projected among the 85 allowed.
Somehow, I kind of doubt LSU will get to sign another extra recruit & will likely be allowed 26, as previously mentioned.

We have an insane number of TEs. Attrition was going to come at some point

This isn't good. LSU had only one TE that provides what this kid could have. After Dillon Gordon leaves, Shipley would be the only Les Miles style big TE on the roster.

Wouldn't have done shite here anyways.

It's not really that big of deal. They can always go with a tackle eligible instead of a TE when they go to a heavy/jumbo package for blocking purposes.

He is cousins with Jordan and Jaxon Shipley from University of Texas. I worked with his uncle.
