GOOD LORD IN HEAVEN. I can't believe what I'm reading in this thread.

JOSH PASTNER???

JOSH PASTNER?!?!?!

He is the WORST coach I have ever seen. Seriously, the WORST.

I could go on for hours about the specifics of his deficiencies, but I'll offer just a few highlights:

* A decent recruiter, he takes B+ talent and struggles to challenge in a joke conference.

* In the tournament (when he makes it), he routinely goes one-and-done against inferior talent.

* He has horribly mismanaged his players and ruined the confidence of the Memphis program.

* He does indeed seem to be a genuinely nice guy, but he whines and makes excuses. He doesn't ever learn or grow.

* He has had NO SUCCESS since taking over the Memphis program. NONE. The program has been in decline ever since the day he took over.

I can understand how someone from afar could see some kind of illusion about Pastner (Memphis mystique), but I have watched every game since he became head coach at Memphis, and I've honestly never seen a worse coach.

He is a little kid in a man's body. He makes a big huge show of the fact that he doesn't ever curse. He constantly comes up with fanciful idiotic ideas for strategy that never work.

Bottom line... his teams horribly underachieve... because of him. As soon as recruits and their parents begin to see his total pattern of failure, they'll stop falling for his sincerely enthusiastic recruiting pitch. Then, without any decent talent, things are gonna get really ugly. If Pastner is still at Memphis when they join the Big East... it's gonna be REAL UGLY.

Memphis IS a basketball Mecca...recruiting wise...which is why i'll never worry about Memphis falling apart...it can't and won't happen.

i esp like the way Pastner is doing it...for every five-star player from Memphis we sign...like Joe Jackson or Adonis Thomas...he signs a five-star from outside Memphis...like Will Barton or Shaq Goodwin...you can't let the local HS coaches dictate how you run your program.

the other thing is facilities...LSU can't match FedExForum and the Larry Finch Center.

but like i've said...you want to offer 2.2-2.5 million for Josh...go for it.

most of what you wrote is correct except for the larry finch center. LSU's is actually much nicer.

A college mecca is built with championships and sustained success. Memphis just hasn't had that consistently, and as we all know, zero titles.

Do you know how many ranked teams Pastner has beaten while at Memphis?
Not many? right?

Im not hating. But don't act like Memphis is some basketball mecca. It was when John Calipari was there. That is no longer.

LSU has the potential to be just as good as Memphis with the right hire. To act like Memphis is at some high level is just being ignorant.

Agreed.

I'm at the point that I'm over speculating. I'm excited and worried at the same time. If by Wednesday we don't have someone named it won't be Johnny Jones though IMO

I said that to my buddy today. The longer we go, the better chance it's not Jones. The fact we got through today without him being named is a positive.

But yeah, speculation at this point is pretty much done for me. I've beaten it into the ground.

You talk about Memphis like Cal is still there. Outside of his few year run they haven't been very relevant in basketball on the national scene over the last 2 decades.

With the right Hire LSU could absolutely be what they are on the court. Even with less resources and less fan support. But winning brings both.

I agree with this. Memphis has always been viewed as a "sleeping giant", but until Calipari arrived, they never seemed to realize that potential.

People are overrating Memphis as a program, IMO. It does have all of the pieces to be a great program, but it really hasn't been.

They're not a top 5 or top 10 program historically but they are way above lsu.

I dont think they are way above historically. Id bet they match up pretty well on paper.

to be way ahead Memphis would at least have to have a championship, which they don't.

Over what time frame? I'd like to see you make the case.

But, if we are talking about what LSU can accomplish as a program, I'd say it could absolutely accomplish what Memphis has...minus the Calipari years. In fact, I think LSU has done that.

from Wikipedia

Final Fours: LSU 4, Memphis 3

Elite 8: Memphis 6, LSU 6 . (Memphis actually vacated 2. But i'll give them for arguments purposes.)

Sweet 16: Memphis 11(vacate 5, but ill give it to ya again).. LSU 9.

Tournament app: Memphis 24, LSU 20

LSU 3 or 4 NBA HOF'ers.

Memphis ?????

i dont see how that is way above historically. Assuming everything on Wiki is accurate
