I was at the game Saturday and like several people have mentioned there were way to many times our defense wasn’t paying attention when the ball was snapped. I’m talking about the ball being snapped and their running backs hitting the hole before some of our guys even knew what was going on. There were times their receivers were starting their routes and the DB in front of them wasn’t even looking at them. I remember seeing that and thinking wow, that’s not good at all.

This bothered me as well. I think it’s largely a product of the ridiculous tempo that Kiffin likes to run.

Here’s the thing though - you know that Lane Kiffin runs a ton of tempo. It’s what he does. You have to be prepared for that.

The other thing that bothered me watching some breakdowns yesterday was how none of our DBs seemed to want to make a hit on anyone.

Guys had open kill shots all night and just weren’t taking them. We really miss Greg Brooks’ physicality.

Denver and sage looked like an old married couple out there before the snap multiple times

Yep, that play where one of our guys was making a tackle by himself and trying to keep the dude from picking up the first down and Sage just comes trotting up an stops and doesn’t even try to help prevent the first down, unbelievable

I mean they practiced against it all week, what else can you do?

Apparently our guys weren’t ready for the snap on offense either in the most important drive of the game….twice.

I don’t know, but when you’re in the 4th quarter and guys still aren’t ready at the snap* it’s not a good look.

I’m not placing blame so much as pointing out that we didn’t seem to be prepared for it at the start of the game, nor did we adjust to it as the game went on. It’s frustrating regardless of who is at fault.

*I’m specifically talking about the DBs here. The DL got caught by the tempo a few times as well but that’s because they were gassed, not because they were trying to get calls in. At least that’s what it looked like.

I was told that in 2020 the defense would often be looking to the sidelines for a play and never get a signal then improvise. Kind of amazing that the defense looked just as confused on Saturday as they did waiting for Bo Pelini in 2020

Not sure. That's the coach's job to figure out. Obviously they weren't successful at it.

He usually does, but this year, Ole Miss had one of the slowest operating offenses in college before the LSU game. I was surprised to find out that there is a star for that too and Ole Miss was 100th or something like that for time in between plays.

They must have seen something on film and decided to go tempo and sideline to to sideline because they kept running that little pitch play to the RBs and it worked.

That’s actually a really interesting point.

Just looked it up and prior to the LSU game, Ole Miss was running 64.7 plays per game (T-103 in FBS). They ran 88 plays against LSU.

Last year, Ole Miss ran 78.8 plays per game - 5th most in FBS.

I’m not sure what to make of that. Maybe Lane has been trying to take some pressure off of his defense but just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go fast vs LSU.

This is called leadership and communication. Something we clearly don’t have on that side of the ball. I think this is where losing Brooks hurts the most.

Matt House has to simplify the defense particularly when you are playing against the fast tempo. The defense is definitely thinking too much and not just reading and reacting. They need to go live in practice more early in the week and get the intensity up.

Let the corners run man all game. No thinking involved. Just cover your man. It couldn't get any worse for our secondary.

Denver is better at man too. If he was in man on that 3rd down, I bet he picks it to seal the game.
