re: Guilbeau's take on QB situation

#42 was apparently not able to do what the offensive coordinators wanted to accomplish. Which is why he played sparingly. Also, a running QB puts an extra runner on the field which prevents the LBs from keying in on the RB on obvious running plays. Miles wanted to chew the clock and saw what I've been seeing in spite of the wins.
vs. Oregon 175 yards
vs. Northwestern St 175 yards
vs. Miss St 148 yards
vs. WVU 186 yards
vs. UK 179 yards (JJ's first game back)
vs. UF 248 yards
vs. UT 260 yards
Last year we had 225 yards with 45 attempts. JJ accounted for 50 of those yards, 23 on a block when running a TE reverse. We know #42 doesn't block. JJ helps the running game. Some believe the running game is good as is without JJ. I say JJ is an insurance policy on the running game against a defense like Alabama. Miles agrees with me.

LSU went from being the balanced offense it’s been all season to a front-running, rush-first offense intent on grounding out the clock in the second half against the Vols. It worked as LSU ate up chunks of second-half clock with both tailback Spencer Ware and Jefferson delivering blows to the defense.

An incomplete pass stops the clock. A rush for zero yards keeps the clock moving. We have yet to complete every pass thrown as has most if not all of the major college QBs to allow the clock to keep running while passing.
Let's not assume stupidity ok chief?
The point of my statement regarding throwing the ball to keep the clock moving is that when we face better defenses they will stack the box and force us to pass - likely on a third and long (this is the part I assumed most smart enough to infer w/o it being spelled out) in order to get the yards needed to keep possession. We have seen over the last few games that if in an obvious passing down while the game is still relatively in doubt JL is taking the snaps. My main point was that we need to work on these situations with JL as much as possible to become better at it rather than giving someone playing time just for the sake of it. Personally I don't see a time when we will ABSOLUTELY HAVE to run a QB waggle or option play to save the season - JMO tho......

wait, Miles may play QB?

bash GG all you want. His article hits the nail on the head. On paper and using logic, it does not make sense. Miles is playing his gut here and knows there will be times when he will need JJ.
You can look at stats all you want, but Lee did look a bit shaky in the first half. completions were dump offs. he was showing happy feet on several occasions.
I think Miles did the right thing by playing JJ more in the second half.

Miles knows exactly what he is doing. the last 2 teams we played have injured qbs. we are just one play from needing jj in a nc year. miles has kept relative harmony on the team (nfl GMs have noticed) and most importantly, miles does not want to be a passing team. so all this talk about "perfecting" the passing game does not matter. miles will run the ball, play great defense and we won't EVER be behind in games and need to pass. thus, miles knows more than the rant.

Miles was asked after the game how he told Lee that he was not starting the second half after such a good first half. Miles bristled and was uncharacteristically short and angry with his answer.
“It wasn’t any NOT starting the second half,” Miles said. “We got the ball on the goal line. We had to come off the 1-yard line. The play we were going to call was going to have 9 (Jefferson) in it. It had nothing to do with Lee not starting. This is a play, a particular play. And it ended up being a drive.”
Interesting Fact: I was at the press conference and it wa Guilbeau himself who asked the above question when Miles "bristled". He asked him, "How do you tell Lee that he is going NOT Start the second half . . . " Miles did seem a little perturbed but not angry with GG. Now GG writes this article, stirring stuff up, and doesn't even acknowledge that it was him who asked the question!

I haven't read the whole thread, but from what I've read, people need to assess JJ's role in the Tennessee game logically, taking into account our team this year and Les's MO.
At halftime, LSU was up 17-7 against an outgunned opponent. LSU struggled in the first half a bit, especially in the running game, but was clearly the better squad. The only way LSU loses that game is turnovers, which Miles eliminates as a threat from the running game by essentially benching a fumbler for two games and eliminates as a threat from the passing game by taking the air out of the ball. Regarding the latter, the problem is that the run game was struggling in the first half with Lonergan hurt and general offensive lethargy, and we still needed to score to ice the game. As a result, he puts in his more athletic QB, doesn't let him throw and provides a different running option to open up lanes. If you need a pass for a key offensive pickup, you put back in your better passer, which Les did for some 3rd down conversions. You make it 11v11, essentially eliminate the chance of a turnover, and let the team with lesser talent basically beg for the game to end because the running game with increased running options basically beat the crap out of them.
I agree that Lee is the better QB and should continue to get the majority of snaps. I also often disagree with Miles and still worry that he will have one of his yearly gaffes that baffles the world. I would be more worried about all of this if his plan wasn't working to absolute perfection. It is the perfect plan for a team with limited experienced QB talent. Play field position, ride the defense and run the ball until they beg for mercy.

and will continue to struggle when they continue to try to run the ball between the tackles when the opposing team stacks 8-9 guys in the box.

No, I should have been clearer. I agree he's not a fumbler and Les should give him more carries. I mentioned it simply to show that Les almost overreacts to turnovers because he sees them as a prime way for a talented LSU team to lose. He attempts to limit them in anyway possible, including benching for the slightest infraction to scare his runners into never doing it. He may be excessive with it, and I think he probably is, but it illustrates how phobic he is about turnovers.

Completely agree with his assessment
Lee should have played more last year, earned it, yet didn't see the field like he should have
JJ got put back in just because he brought a different dimension, didn't Lee also bring that last year?
Just bring us a championship Les and all will be good

Exactly. So, JJ should play a similar amount?
I'm sure JL appreciated getting the kneeldown on the final play of the Cotton Bowl as his only snap. He should have told Miles

Glenn is spot on...I wonder if MIles is playing Jefferson in response to his seniors council to keep peace on the team...I sure hope not

Oh lawd. You act like JJ has not been productive. I really think a moratorium on these threads would be good for EVERYONE.

Ladies and gentlemen, the dumbass of the year award goes to......ready4something.
applaud les for limiting his throws (even though LSU leads the nation in red zone efficiency, JL leads the sec in passer rating, and is 20th in the nation in efficiency, and has 11/1 td to int ratio. wow.....it's not like JJ is in the game throwing pics, looking like a deer in headlight. We got a quarterback playing great. There really are some idiots on this board...most are about 19 or 20.

It's tough on opponent DC's to game plan for the two-headed attack. They now have to bring to different defensive game plans to the table, which requires more time, effort, and creates the possibility of more confusion for the defense. Preparing to play both Lee and JJ is like having to prepare to play two teams in one week. We'll see if it works against Bama.
