It's time for everyone to get over Russell Shepard. He's just not that good of a player.

I have been saying this for a while and I get crucified. He's going to break a long one out of the RB position every now and then, but he is never going to be a legitimate WR. He's got terrible hands and game awareness and he is easy to tackle

GG acts as though under classman are expected to be impact players. Some are but not many. RS will deliver in 2011, GG will be eating his words come year end.

kid is learning a new position and has had piss poor QB play, let me give him another season there before trashing him and labeling him a bust.

BilJ my feeling is that we have about 5 guys more equipped to play WR right now on the roster over Shepard, but Miles made too many campaign promises to him to get him to come here. He needs to play full time RB (when he plays).

Randle
Toliver
Wright
Boone
Williams
Landry

All better than RS right now. Bad coaching or not!

I agree!!! It's not like he had the highest yards per carry his true freshman year. He wasn't used enough his Freshman year and when he was in everyone knew where the ball was going and he still was dynamic. Now last year he was used more as a decoy in the backfield even though if Jefferson wouldn't of kept the fake Shepard would have had an open field! While at receiver he hasn't set the world on fire as a five star reciever would be expected to do, but he wasn't recruited as a five star receiver. Besides what receivers in the last 3 years "due to QB's" have been? I would like to see the stat of how many he has dropped compared to the other receivers. I remember in the Cotton Bowl a throw across the middle that the ball was thrown at his cleats. LINK

Crowton's inability to allow anybody to have an impact should be taken into account as well.. i think this season should be a very telling year for Shepard

not sure exactly what you mean. i don't blame sheps performance solely on crowton and i've been a bit crowton critisizer. however, he still has 2 yrs to go and i am very hopeful that the best is yet to come. he's a great guy.

Well the jest of what he is saying is true but it comes across harsh.

I think the kid is a good player but just too small for the SEC.

I like the guy and I still believe his best play is yet to come. But damned if I know what position it will be from. Like someone said already, we've got better players at RB and R and QB so I'm not sure where it would happen from.

I can see using him as a decoy but that won't work if he doesn't get to break one loose every now and then.

Plus, great quarterbacks are not needed to win national championships - just decent ones. LSU won national titles in 2003 and 2007 with average quarterbacks.

This is the biggest misconception. Both Flynn and Mauck started games in the NFL. They weren't just "average".

Shepard, Peterson Give LSU Win Over No. 18 UNC

Two of the finest athletes in college football helped the 21st-ranked LSU football team take a 20-point lead over No. 18 North Carolina before the Tigers held off a fierce fourth-quarter rally on Saturday evening in the Georgia Dome to win, 30-24. LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson dazzled the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff crowd with a school-record 257 return yards (157 punt/100 kickoff), including an 87-yard touchdown as part of 23-0 LSU run in less than six mintes. Speedy wide receiver Russell Shepard scored LSU's first two touchdowns of the season, the second being a 50-yard run on the heels of a Peterson kickoff return to midfield.

Shepard = R Murphy

nice moves in the open field, but go down like a sack of potatoes.

As luck will have it, we have lots of good WR's.
They will all get a chance in spring and summer.

I am not convinced Shepard is a WR or even Slot WR.

let him return punts, save the wear and tear on starters in the defensive backfield.

All this being said he still is only halfway through his career. He should have been a red shirt but even now he has two seasons left and I'm not going to say he's just not that good of a player because he has been quiet his freshman and sophomore seasons. He could break out and have two great years and we look back on him and say he was a damn good football player

I think getting Mett is as big for Shepard as anybody. He needs to be able to catch slants, slip screens, quick hitches and swing passes in space. JJ's worst throw is his short ball. They guy is litteraly terrible at throwing the ball to a target withing 10 yards and he can't turn and throw to sideline well. If you can lead Shep on the short quick throws where he can make the catch in space without stopping, then he'll be a nightmare on the perimeter.

If you don't think that Matt Flynn is a better than average quarterback then I don't know what to say. Let's name all of the other quarterbacks around the nation in 07 and where they are now. Tell me he wasn't a top-20 quarterback that year.

So we beat UNC without his 2 TDs??

I said last year at the beginning of the season that the LSU coaches should watch what Ole Miss did with McCluster and try to mimic it with Shep.

The problem with my logic is that LSU has too many playmakers which means that Shep will under no circumstances ever get 20 to 25 touches per game.

I think Shep and McCluster are very similar with McCluster having much better hands and Shep probably having a little better straight line speed based on McCluster's combine 40.

Let him return kicks and punts to get the ball in his hands more often to make up for a lack of touches in offensive sets.

All in all, he will never be what most envisioned at LSU. If we can get Skyler Green type of production out of him before he leaves, I think we should all be satisfied with him at this point.
