It's not really about PETA.
Mike isn't just a school mascot anymore, he's more of a rescued big cat at a refuge. As such, LSU would lose its refuge status if it wheeled Mike out onto the field. Basically, they could do it, but it would the last tiger LSU ever got.
It's the only way to keep getting new Mikes on campus. You can't just go out and buy them anymore.
