Anybody hyping the HCIW angle needs to remember that.

Florida has taken chances with a few since Spurrier left, with pretty much the same result:
Zook
Muschamp
McElwain

And yes, I understand we've already made that leap with our current HC. My answer is the same as it was in 2015 and 2016: LSU should conduct a nationwide coaching search for the best candidate available anytime the HC spot is open.

No but assistants that have incredible work ethic, attention to detail, respect from their peers, and are easy to work with usually succeed as head coaches

ETA:

I agree about nationwide search. Just don’t discredit Aranda because he’s a DC.

Yeah I don’t totally disagree either, but ruling them out means you could be missing out on a Kirby Smart or Lincoln Riley.

It’s kind of a catch 22. You’re either paying out the nose for a proven elite coach (who still may not succeed at your school), or taking a bigger risk on a less experienced guy.

People don’t respond well to sound logic around here. Prepare to hear a lot about Lincoln Riley and Kirby Smart. Maybe even some comments comparing Aranda to Saban.

People are obsessed with absolutes.

Just because there's no sure thing doesn't mean that you can't make choices that line the odds up in your favor. All assistants aren't in the same pool just because none of them are sure things.

Yeah, even when you hire the good ones there's a good chance he won't work out. That's even more of a reason not to go with a bad one, because the bad ones have almost no chance to work out.

The difference is Aranda is truly GREAT at what he does and can handle that entire side of the ball on his own (regardless of the fact that he would hire a DC). That would be very enticing for a great offensive mind to come coach under. That is a formula that can be very successful

All great head coaches were assistants at some point. Your point is stupid. Not all head coaches are good. We know that.

Aranda appears to have everything you want in a HC. Not sure if he will be a great HC or not. No one knows. You also don't know what the fit will be like. I was convinced Les would lead us straight to hell when he was hired. I was wrong.

And many times they are.

Saban.
Smart.
Riley.
Fisher.
Mullen.
Herman.
Kelly.

You are 100% correct sir. The problem is we have no one in Admin that can conduct a nation wide search.

I don't totally disagree with the OP, but Aranda is arguable the best defensive mind in all of football, not just among the college ranks.

If you've ever listened to him speak, he has an incredible understanding of offenses as well. He very well could be a damn good OC if he wanted to be.

He's a unique coach, he's not loud or overly vocal. But he sure as hell is smarter than 99.9% of coaches in football. THAT is what makes him a great potential hire. The fact that he truly understands both sides of the ball.

Sure. There are no guarantees. But, aren't the odds better if you elevate a COORDINATOR to head coach, versus a POSITION COACH? Ya know?

we'll see how good Riley is gonna be now that Baker Mayfield won't be there. Kind of like Jimbo after he lost his QB ! how did that workout for Florida ST.

If Miles left for Michigan after the 2007 season, LSU would have likely promoted Bo Pelini.

Dodged a bullet there

All great Head Coaches were great assistants

so there is that

I agree with Nationwide search but some HC experience rule doesn't make sense

you go out and get the best regardless of where they are at
