re: Good ESPN Insider Article by KC Joyner on why Jefferson should start next year.

I for one thought the article was good and insightful........stats are after all stats, gotta learn to look beyond them and still make a good decision.......its hard to see folks go from bashing JJ to liking JJ to back to bashing JJ cause they now have mettenberger.......grow some roots and stick in one place dang it :)

Mettenberger will immediately be the most talented QB on the roster.

Yeah, but if you don't play against the SEC you aint shite.

Is there a major college program where the QB is not under a lot of pressure to be good consistantly?

Fify.
Seriously, back out the bowl game where JJ had 5+ weeks of prep and his 2010 stats stink, he almost doubled his passing TD's in one game. The second half at AR was horrible. I am glad Mett signed up, but will be shocked if they both don't get significant PT. Then again the OL might be so improved mobility is not as necessary as in 2009/2010 and Mett plays more.

Having watched JJ for the last two years, I have no doubt in my mind Mettenberger will be the most talented passer on the team. I think in Krags offense, Mettenberger will get the majority of snaps this year.

More like signed R. Mallett.

The analysis in this article is horribly flawed:
(1) He ignores actual passing yards in favor of YPA, completion percentage and vertical-bad-decision rate. JJ only eclipsed 200 yards ONCE all season. Only looking at those other metrics completely obscures the fact that he didn't generate enough offense. If Ridley and our o-line hadn't exceeded expectations this year, we would have lost several additional games. Even in the Bama game (his supposed turning point), he only passed for 141 yds...hardly setting the world on fire.
(2) This point is partially related to (1), but Jefferson's stats were accumulated this year against teams who KNEW we could not pass the ball and were altering their defense (loading the box) based on that knowledge. Against any kind of balanced defense, JJ's numbers would have been even worse.

Anyone who things JJ deserves to be awarded the starting position based on past play is a certifiable lunatic. No one can say that with a straight face.
ESPN "isiders" are paid to create controversy to stimulate paid subscriptions. I highly doubt even the author believes JJ deserves the starting spot based on past play.

Well throw this in the mix. What if krag can get Lee to have the right mechanics and he starts? All three will fight for the job. We dont even know our third string quarterback right now.

Maybe. Even with his practice reps at UGA the guy has never played a down in the SEC. JUCO is JUCO. I really do hope he becomes the go to guy, but JJ's wheels and experience may make position sharing more viable. It would be interesting to really understand what happened with GC and the QB's internally over the past two seasons to comprehend the ineffectiveness on the field. Even TN replaced their existing QB with a newcomer halfway through the season based upon poor performance and the new QB played well.

His wheels and past experience may be a liability. He runs when he shouldn't at times, and developed some horrible habits.

Horrible isn't the word. Try again

I have no idea what JJ sees nor what goes on between his ears in any given situation, but the capacity to convert 3rd and 19 with his legs brings something to the table Mett and Lee don't have. This is like market forecasting. Don't know, just glad the position has been shored up with potential talent and a new OC is on the job. We'll see whether the latent talent is realized on the field or not.

no QB should ever perform against Vandy like he did.

ppl think I'm nuts, but I thought against Vandy he made the right reads but terrible throws. I mean shitty shitty throws. even his completions were bad (see wheel route to Ware that shoulda been a TD).
Tennessee though.... what was he, 3/10 with 2 INTs. brutal, brutal stuff.
all in all, I hope Mett comes in and lights it up every day in practice and wins the job. I'm ready for routine passes to be less adventurous and better executed.
Posted on 2/9/11 at 5:38 pm to tirebiter
Joyner forgets a very salient point--how both Mett and JJ peform in spring & fall practices competing against one another for the starting position will likely be the biggest factor in deciding who will start.

ESPN is paying this guy to write that weak arse shite?
