I know LSU would be a stepping stone for him. But maybe he’d stay a little longer with a chance of being the head coach in waiting.

The only thing Freeman cares about is what school gets him a good HC gig the quickest, not cool titles.

Great idea all we need from him is a couple of great years to get established.

This is usually attached to a pay raise. Since he's not on staff yet, it'd be a little premature to attach this title to his pay.

Where has this ever worked out? Jimbo is the one head coach in waiting that I remember actually getting the job but that came with forcing Bowden out the door unceremoniously.

I’m pretty sure Mickey Joseph has the title of assistant head coach already. You don’t need that to get Freeman. If you want him you offer him money he has never seen in the coaching ranks and then the ball is his court if he wants to accept or if he is just comfortable at Cincy waiting for Fickell to leave for another job so he can be head coach in his native state. Offer him right at $2 million per for 3 years and he would have to really think hard about leaving an offer that triples his current salary on the table. Odds are he does great and is gone in a year or 2 but that would mean LSU had been playing great so I’ll take that trade.

Sure, but WTF does it mean? Not jack shite! If it was me I would turn that bogus title down as patronizing.

You don’t understand what that means. Coach in waiting insinuates the current coach might be out soon (like with Fickell likely getting a bigger job in the future) and the CIW will be the replacement. Assistant HC is an arbitrary title as an excuse to give a guy more money. In this case, Freeman would only get a chance at the job if Orgeron is fired, and it’s not likely Freeman would get hired unless he seriously impressed.

Not the right timing.

If hired as a DC, you'd hold the Assistant or Associate Head Coach title for at least a year or two. If / when Freeman is doing well enough that he's getting other good offers, then you negotiate for him to stay with a pay raise and a title like this (which may or may not have many / any duties, but helps justify the raise).

And I see someone mentioned the Head Coach in Waiting title. This only makes sense for a new hire if-- and only if-- you have a successful coach about to retire (and minimal chance of being fired) like Bowden at FSU. At this point for LSU (this year sucking notwithstanding), it would make no sense for them to hire any new coordinator with this title since there is no talk of Orgeron retiring. Without retirement on the horizon, an "in waiting" title would be a vote of no confidence for the current coach.

Hire him as Defensive Coordinator, Associate Head Coach, and Head Coach in waiting.

Change Orgeron's title to Soon to be Head Coach Emeritus.

Yeah. Just take that title away from Raymond and give to the new guy. Makes a lot of sense huh?

I believe Mickey Joseph is the Assistant Head Coach right now but your point still stands. That title is not supposed to be used to lure people in. It’s used to get a trusted member on staff more money. No one deserves that title more than Mickey Joseph.

Yep. He is going to be talking to Notre Dame, Texas and Auburn. He is in a great spot to take over for his best friend and kids godfather, Fickell, when he gets a power 5 job. All the talk of head coach in waiting is ridiculous. I hope he comes but if he is interested in moving on, I don’t see it is for money. He’s turned that down already. And I think we will lose the bidding war.
I’d love to see him here. More so than Odom and definitely Mason. No more retreads sitting on millions in the bank from buyouts at failed jobs. I’d like to see a upcoming hungry coach for 2-3

We have a head coach that doesn't actually coach. If LSU has success everyone knows it is because of the assistant coaches. So with that success is going to be the difficulty of keeping those head coaches around.
