a horrible idea. The announcers last night were talking about baseball wanting to get rid of it. Yet Ted Williams, the last guy to bat over .400 (.403) in the big leagues, faced a huge shift to the right side his entire career.

It is a horrible idea.

It’s gone as well as adding in DH both leagues in MLB. Great move

They’d have to have strict boundaries or leave things to judgement calls AND some rule about when players could move. It is an asinine notion.

Why didn’t you include “a horrible idea” in your title, then explain why in your post?

I heard someone describe why eliminating the shift is a good thing. I’m still not sure if I like it or not but thought it was a good way of using other sports to see why it’s not out of the ordinary.

It went something along the lines that in most other sports the team that has the ball has more rules regarding formations and alignment. For example in football the offense has to be set for one second before the snap as well as 7 have to be on the line of scrimmage, basketball you can only be in the paint for 3 seconds, hockey you can’t cross the blue line until the puck does, soccer you can’t go further than the last non goalie defender without the ball going beyond them. We are used to that team being the offense in other sports but in baseball it is the defense

All sports leagues are ruining their respective sport by putting restrictions on how Defenses can play.

Left handed hitters don't want to change their approach at the plate to hit to the opposite field because it may lower their HR totals. Hitters (and the analytics geeks) have become obsessed with the HR to the point it has dropped the overall batting average and strikeouts are up.

LH batter use the excuse that "Pitchers throw too hard" to hit to the opposite field, however, RH hitters don't seem to have that problem. They just want the shift banned so their average will increase without having to become a better overall hitter.

Yeah, let’s judge an idea using the greatest hitter who ever lived — who last played 62 years ago — as a proxy. That’ll give us a sound conclusion.

I’m more amazed that we can’t teach top players to hit to opposite fields and take advantage of it

Many of those rules have been a part of the game since its inception. The shift has been a part of baseball for generations, it's just now players are not wanting to adjust to how the defense lines up or how the pitchers are pitching.

It would be like an offensive football team that solely relies on throwing the football complaining about defenses using too many defensive backs.

Agreed. Thought my son was joking when he told me about the rule. Obviously trying to increase scoring but asinine imo.

I agree. If a team wants to put on a shift you just have to hit it where they ain’t. That is part of the strategy.

That’s true. Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn would wear out the opposite field if the defense shifted on them

If players would learn to go the other way, the shift would go away.
