Conference Tournaments are dumb to start with, but they wanted to make more money, so to make some rhyme to the reason of a conference tournament the NCAA decided to make that the auto bid. Because clearly a 3-4 game stretch > 16-20 game stretch.
I'm glad there's still conferences without one and just use the regular season champ.
