Taking pitches early does many things including building up a pitcher's pitch count, and letting the hitter see pitches. When you are batting in the sixth or seventh inning, wouldn't you rather have seen 7 or 8 pitches, all of his breaking stuff, or do you want to face him having swung at the only two strikes you have seen all day?
